" My husband has an interview next month for a position in Vienna. We''re currently living in Canada, and are very excited about the possibility! I''d like to do some research on Vienna - what it''s like, average prices, things to do, etc. Any tips on where to start?? We also have 2 small children, aged 2 and 4, and a dog - any info on kids activities, bringing the dog with us, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Please email me at heather.mcintosh@home.com if you can help. Thanks! Heather "

" Hi Heather, I''m Canadian and just moved to Vienna last summer. The biggest tip I can give anyone coming here is to take German lessons as quickly as possible - this will make the integration so much easier for yourself and your family. There are many great schools here in Vienna for foreigners, just ask and I can give you some recommendations. Financially, I''d say the rents are comparable to Canada and the income taxes work out to be about the same (but there are less deductions available!). Gas is twice as much, food is about the same, while wine is about half the price. I''m a member of the Women''s Career Network (www.wcnvienna.org) which has been an excellent souce for english speaking friends plus the American Women''s Associatin has many english speaking women as members. A site that is tremedously helpful for finding out about vienna is www.virtualvienna.net - should be a good start. Hope this helps "

Hi Heather, As far as the cost of living in Vienna, I would say that it really depends on where you live in Canada, since there is a wide range in terms of rent. If you live in Toronto, it will be about the same. If you are coming from a smaller town, you will probably have a big increase in rent. Taking a dog over is no problem - he needs a rabies shot (within a year of departure and at least one month before the trip) and a health certificate signed by a vet. There is a bilingual form on the website of the Austrian embassy to make it easier. (Otherwise, you must get everything translated to German.) I agree with Canuck - can't stress enough how important the German lessons are. Berlitz is expensive but good. Canuck, do you know if there is a Graz chapter of the Women's Association?
