I will be moving to Austria (Graz) in August. I would appricate ANY advice, however small, anyone could offer. I know what I am getting into (I hope!) having traveled most parts of the world. I know language is everythng, but outside of that what challenges will I be facing? Thanks!

Hi Paul,
I am an American living in Innsbruck for the last 9 months. The biggest thing is the language. If you know German that will get you a long way. People in gerneral are pretty nice somewhat cold but nice. The thing we miss most are the conveniences from home (not very good selection of consumer goods and the store hours are terrible). I'm not sure how big Graz is but Innsbruck is small (100,000 population). It would be much easier to get acclimated in a larger city because there are more resources available to expats. The best thing about Innsbruck is the outdoor activites. Again I'm not sure about Graz. Good Luck!

Thanks for the comments! I know what you mean about store/shop hours. Most small towns are ghost towns on Sunday. I hope all goes well. I seem to have employment lined up so that will be helpful. We'lll see!!

Hi Lester, It looks like your post is from a few years ago, so I'm wondering if this will get to you. I am an American looking to move to Austria. I speak German fairly fluently--I worked in Germany for a year back in 2001. I have only travelled to Austria though, so I don't have any contacts. We were thinking about moving to a small town in the mountains, and wondering how you secured employment and a work visa. I was on a government exchange program when I worked in Germany, so I don't have experience going about this on my own. Thanks, Janet

Hi Paul, I'm curious if you ended up moving to Austria, and how the move went for you. We are an American couple thinking about moving to Austria (not Vienna, probably a smaller city or town in the mountains) next year and I'm trying to find out more about securing employment and a work visa. I do speak German fluently, which may help once we get there, but we are just starting to look for information. Thanks, Janet

Hi Janet,
I've just subscribed as we (as in family) are looking to move to Austria to open a guesthouse in one of the main ski areas. Being EU citizens I expect (hope) the legalaties will be simplified and we are currently about to embark on German language courses. Sking is bringing us there as this is our love and hope to be able to incorporate more regular skiiing into our life - though we are not niave and anticipate some hard graft. Anway, to cut a long story short, how have your plans progressed. I'm beginning to think that fear is the biggest barrier - all th eothers can be overcome.
