Maybe Moving to Vienna - Many Questions

My husband is interviewing for a position at the UN in a few weeks. We have so many questions!

1. Schools. Our twins will be entering 7th grade. Are their waiting lists for the three main schools (VIS, DIS, AIS)? Would you please share your experience with any of these schools.

2. Housing. We are leaning toward living in the 22nd district if our children go to VIS. Do you have other suggestions? What can we expect in the way of housing? Should we bring all of our furniture or will we be able to find things there we can afford? How big are the apartments? How much can we expect to pay. We are a family of four used to living in 2300 sq ft! We can adapt - but want to know how much we will have to :)

3. Has anyone ever brought their pet birds with them? What is involved? I can only find information on dogs and cats. We are trying to find out if quarantine will be required.

4. Groceries! What kind of things should we stock to bring with us that we will have difficulty finding there? How do the prices/availability compare to the US?

Is anyone willing to e-mail me personally to help answer future questions should he be offered and accept the position?

TIA!

Someone posted a review of Vienna Christian School on our site at:

Hope this helps.

The FHWN (www.hwn.ac.at) runs a degree programme in English now in Business Consultancy, from start to finish and certainly worth considering if your kids are going to stay longer.

Hi,

I am interviewing for the position at IAEA (Un agency) in Vienna tomorrow for an IT position. Is your husband an IT professional too?

I see several of you are interviewing for positions at the UN - Vienna. I have applied for a position, can someone tell me what happens next. When I check the posting, it reads "Candidates Still Under Consideration." The posting closed Aug 10, aside from waiting, what comes next? I appreciate any insights from anyone who has gone through the process. Thanks.

We lived in Vienna for 3 years, where i worked at the VIC, and enjoyed it very much.
All the questions you have you should raise with those interviewing you.
We have no children but the VIS has a very good reputation.
There are single family homes, but more apartments. 2400 square feet is very large by European standards, but can be found. The VIC has a housefinding service where you can specify your wishes and they can provided you with what they have on their books as advised to them by agents/landlords. Prices vary considerably but the UN system does provide a rental subsidy.
I know nothing about pet birds.
The VIC has a commissary which has importes a limited range of goods from all parts of the world (and rock bottom prices for cigarettes and alcohol). You can find local equivalents of most things you'd find at home- you'll pay more but you have an element in the salary package to compensate for that. I always think you should learn to eat local produce rather than import a ton of home goods (the Naschmarkt is excellent for fresh produce), but maybe you should take a supply of any prescription medicines (although the VIC medical services are very good)

How did you come across that position, if I may ask? I'm looking for an IT job in Vienna, preferrebly in UNO, since I don't speak German and would appreciate any advice on this matter. Thanks!
