Where is the spinach?

My wife and I are planning to move to Austria soon. We will be buying an inn in the mountains. One thing that has been strange to me on my trips there has been the produce selection in the markets. There is plenty of frozen vegetables but not much in the way of fresh greens, like spinach, kale, arugula, broccoli... My wife is Czech so it is pretty similar there. They like their sausage and goulash. Me too, but I like fresh veggies as well. So are there markets where you can get all of these veggies as we do in the States? It may be just spending the time to find sources but if someone here is in the food industry I would love to hear about this from you. Thanks for the feedback.

I am not in the food industry but I did notice the same thing when I moved here. You can shop at places like Metro or C+C Pfiffer if you are a business otherwise the produce is seasonal. There is spinach (although it isnt really in season at the moment), you can get a fairly good selection of regional (seasonal) produce at Lidl or Hofer for a decent price. Farmers markets are an option although they are a bit pricier. In my experience the place to get the best variety and freshness are the turkish/oriental shops. They deliver every couple of days from turkey and they are quite inexpensive. The turkish shop is where I finally (after 4 years) found celery:).

Lived here 4 years, today there was KALE in a supermarket first time I've seen it - called "green cabbage". I live in Kärnten. The vegetables in the supermarkets are, with few exceptions, old and pretty low in flavour. INterspa seems the best where we are Billa the worse. There are suppliers to hotels and restaurants who drive round in vans, so perhaps they are fresher. Anther interesting element is how bitter vegetables can be here! My wife, a very keen and experienced cook, spends quite a time working out substitutes for ingredients, spices and herbs.

Bitter celery like the Austrian type?
Sounds like you are in Vienna with such exotic shops as Turkish ones!

Thanks for the replies all. Yes this is a concern. Here in the states we have access to a ton of different foods and most people eat a t McD's. Shame. We will be travelling in Kärnten in December to look at areas and pension properties. We will have to look into suppliers so that we don't rely on Billa. I see some Asian markets in Salzburg as well.

Graz actually, but turkish/ oriental shops are often in smaller towns as well, have a look around. They are often small (one room).
