I am about to move to Baku to begin a teaching job. I will be living there alone and wondered if anyone had any advice about Baku in terms of shopping, socialising, sightseeing, security etc.
Thanks
Mallory

Shopping takes some effort. There are smalll neighborhood markets but getting to supermarkets could well require a bus or taxi ride. Prices are somewhat higher than in other countries, and choices more limited--bring extras of your favorite things and come with limited expectations. Fruits and veg in season are good and not expensive but not huge choice. Buses are frequent and cheap. There will probably be plenty of socialising through your school or expat groups--there are certainly plenty of bars! See internations.com. Security is good--I am a woman and feel very safe on my own. Good luck!

Re sightseeing: get Azerbaijan, by Mark Elliott, Trailblazer Publications. Much better than Lonely Planet

Thank you so much for your reply. Have the lonely planets guide but will search out your recommendation. Could I ask what the mail service is like? Was working in Kuwait and there you had to set up a private service. is there a mail service? I am also bringing 2 cats (saved from Kuwait!) - are there many strays? they were house cats in Kuwait but have spent the summer in Italy roaming outside and wondered if I will have to lock them up again!
Thanks again

I have been here only a very short time myself so I don't have epxerience with the mail, but I have heard that it is quite good. And, there are a lot of stray cats around...

Best wishes on your move. Glad the book was helpful. You will find Baku's parks and many fountains a real pleasure after Kuwait... The Interntional Women's Club has coffee every Friday morning if you have a free Friday before you start work. 10:45 at the restaurant above McDonalds at Fountain Square. A great way to meet people.
