While living in Bermuda for 3.5 years, there was an active website for buying and selling household goods. The expat community was very transient there and you could buy anything from an iron to dishes to furnishings - USED.
I am trying to find out if the same type of website exists in the Bahamas. I know there is an expat population. Wondering if there is a way to purchase used kitchen items, etc. Does anyone know of such a website for Bahamas?

Hi Debib,
I don't know of any such sites, but do know that rental units and houses are primarily furnished with all the household amenities. Many homes for sale are also fully furnished with all household amenities.
Good luck!

try bahamaslocal.com. They have a classified section. Otherwise, there is a home goods store in the Harbor Bay shopping Plaza, Kelly's at the Mall or Robin Hood.
Good luck!

Kelly's is the closest we would come to a department store here, and does have a good housewares department. That being said, everything will be much more expensive than back home. If you decide to bring some things with you, you will need to declare a value on them, and then you will be assessed duties payable - mostly at 45%, on the item plus the freight cost.
That being said, as I mentioned, a lot of rental units and some houses for sale come fully furnished with all your kitchen needs and linens. You may want to replace them, but would not need to right away.
Now, I remembered the other day seeing something on Facebook - "marketplace" or something like that. There were classifieds on there. However, I don't remember where I saw it, and it does not come up quickly when I search.
Good luck!

thanks to all of you for your responses. I have rented a place full of furniture, but the kitchen cupboards were empty and things like an Ironing Board, a Vacuum Cleaner, etc. are things you could buy "used" when you are an expat. You can't bring them from the USA and the price at Kellys was a bit high. So - just wondering why nobody has started a website. Maybe I'll do just that!! I have used Facebook Marketplace - good way to share info. And since arriving in Nassau, I've visited QClub and Kellys to get basic dishes, glasss, silverware, knives, coffee maker, brooms, mops, garbage pails and all the things you don't realize you need until you don't have them. Ha ha!! Thanks Everyone!! Keep your suggestions coming.

Hi debib,
Glad to hear that you have been able to get some of the things that you needed. I forgot about the Thrifty-Way and the Consignment shop. Thrifty Way is on East St., just north of Kelly Lumber. The Consignment shop is on Nassau Street, just behind the Nassau Hotel at the corner of Nassau Street and Bay Street.
Sometimes you can find some gems in both places!

I found a fabulous specialty store today with lots of great unique household things - - - it's called SPLASHDANCE and it's located in the Harbor Bay mall. Got upstairs and you'll find some treasures!

For my clarification as i'm moving to Cable Beach shortly. Anything brought into country is taxable? Including housewares? What about clothes, computers, phones, tools, etc? Is there a place that breaks down the list of items that they will tax? Also we're looking for a container shipping company. Does anyone have info on that? Thanks

Here is a website that gives some of the rates for the items that you are talking about: http://www.thebahamasguide.com/business/tariffs.htm
or you can sign-up for the bahamas govt page to get the up to date rates: http://www.bahamas.gov.bs/bahamasweb2/home.nsf/vContentW/CUSTOMS--Tariff--Tariff+PDF/$FILE/tariff%20amendmts%202010.pdf
There are LOTS of shipping companies. It really depends where you are coming from as to which one I would recommend. Hope this is helpful.

thanks for the quick response. I'll definitely look into these sites as start looking around. Someone had mentioned that getting a container to the island isn't a problem, however getting the container to your location could be a challenge. IS that your experience? Any recommendations? CJ

Ours was easy, it was part of the deal with the company. The problem was that it had to sit in our yard until the customs agent came to open it. We have had two containers delivered since moving here and that was our experience with both of them. Then, the customs agents are really precise, so if you don't have it listed on your paperwork, they get a little irritated. lol. But, we live on a smaller island, so it might be different in Nassau. We are getting ready to receive another shipment through Tropical, they are in Florida. I'll let you know how it goes, how soon are you moving here?

Thats interesting experience. My wife is arriving this weekend in Nassau, as her work starts monday with the resort. I on the other hand am having to stay back to finish up a major home renovation we have going on at house in SoCal. So target is that i get to bahamas in Dec or Jan time frame. Of course i'll be making some trips to be with her during this time. We've already secured a condo which is nicely appointed but getting our own stuff is important as i like to "tinker" with auto's and motorcycles etc. Thus my concerns. Or original home location is Orlando where we have furniture and household items in storage. So, we'll be needing to get some of them to island.

It is very interesting that you found a place that was completely unfurnished. Unfortunately, you have already leased it. Most rental properties are at least partially furnished. If you need to find furnishings, Furniture Plus is a good place to start. There is a Rooms to Go as well, but these are much lower quality. Many people will also purchase from the US and have it shipped over, as there is a lot more choice.
For basic household goods, linens, kitchen & bath, etc., Kelly's Home Centre is the place to go!
If you are already here, you can see if someone will ask the administrators to add you to the Mamma's Marketplace group on Facebook. That is also a good place to pick up household items that others are selling.
Good luck and welcome!

thank you SO much! What a relief! We would like to purchase some local art, tapestry and pottery etc... to decorate in native bahamian flavor. We are hoping to find plates, bowls etc that are kiln fired in the bahamas. But, its definitely very good to now know that R2G is there and this Kellys sounds like a good place for a television and blender 8 )) Blessings! Nick

I arrived in Nassau about four weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at the very reasonable prices at AID. I shopped at the location near the Marathon Mall heading away from the mall and toward Village Rd. and Wulff Rd. Glassware, dishes, kitchen and bathroom amenities galore. On par with stateside shopping similar to Walmart. Decent selections with decent pricing.
