Hi everybody, I have been offered a temporary position in the Bahamas for 2 years and I've got no clue how to decide this. I've never been to the Bahamas, and only the Caribbean once about 15 years ago. I have about a million questions that will help me make my decision. Housing costs seem crazy high, but where is a good place to live - my job will be in town, closer to the eastern side of the island? (No kids, no schools). I have read that crime is high -- is it really that dangerous -- I have read that I shouldn't jog or go places alone. I am not an alarmist, but since I may be there as a woman alone, I don't want to be stuck or afraid. Everything will have to be arranged site unseen so I need trustworthy sources for rentals, what to do about a car, etc., so its a great adventure instead of a nightmare.

There are a lot of islands in the Bahamas. Do you mean New Providence? I suspect you are talking about going to Nassau?

Hi ya, I've been living her for 6 months now, I also had many questions before moving as it's a big transition. Hear our my thoughts, hope they help:
Firstly the cost of renting is VERY high so make sure your company is helping you out with that otherwise you will find you will be spending all your money on rent.
The best place to live is outside of Nassau as the center is dangerous (just like many places in London). I would suggest not driving in the suburbs of Nassau but sticking to both the west or the east of the island. It's not a problem if you accidentally drive through but I would avoid it.
Buying a car (which is essential) is also very expensive (starts at $8000 for an old second hand car) so make sure your company is helping you with this too.
Cost of living is high, in the supermarket everything is roughly double what it costs in the uk.
If you company gives you a good deal that I would strongly recommend moving over here as it's great fun and incredibly relaxing.
Hope this helps :)
Lucy

I went there 5 years ago site unseen, I am a woman and my experiences were amazing. it is crazy expensive, i was there last week gas was 5.85 per gallon, but if you are being offered a job by an organization outside of the bahamas it may be good to look into, but some of the business in the bahamas have issues with paying you in a timely manner.
