looking on line it says a US citizen can stay up to 8 months,, do I need to get a special stamp for that or renew every month, or does it just start on my official entry?

Immigration will give you 1 to 3 months. Then you can ask for an extension. On some islands it is easy on others it can be a pain.

Hi goingtropic,

I see you just arrived this month, and that you are working. This suggests to me that you would have a work permit. If you do have a work permit then the length of stay is not relevant. You are legal to be here so long as you have a valid work permit. If you do not have a work permit and you are working.....good luck my dear.

All that said, I suspect that you DO have a work permit, and that you just did not understand that a work permit provides you with temporary residency so long as you have that valid permit.

What about if you buy a house in Eleuthera? We don't plan to work there. We'll be retired by then

When you buy a home, you can get a temporary residency/annual residency permit. Again, this would supercede any "visitor" limitations as you would be a "legal" resident. If you buy a home at a higher value, you are also eligible to apply for permanent residency. A home with a value of 1.5 M will allow you to get expedited permanent residency, but I BELIEVE you can still apply for PR with a home valued at 500K+. I am not positive if that number has also increased or not, so you would need to check.

How does home ownership affect the visa of spouse and children?

Someone owning a home and applying for a residency permit (temporary or permanent) can get an endorsement for spouse and children. This is only a residency permit, and does not allow you to work. There is a small fee for each dependant's residency permit, and you would need to prove that they will be financially taken care of.
