Hi,

I am moving to Nassau in August and I would really appreciate if I could get some information / advice for the following:
- My work is near Montague Beach, I will be initially living alone and don't plan to drive there so what is the best and Safest location out there for me and estimated rental.
- Regarding the custom duties - so If I am bringing in three four suitcases with me - I have to pay duty on everything even though much of the stuff will be old and used - how would its value be determined?

I am also working out near Montague Beach but am renting in the Cable Beach area. Most expats live around Cable Beach and the bus system around Cable Beach is very convenient. It isn't too convenient however to get to Montague Beach from there. I believe there are some condos not too far away just off Shirley Street and on Village Road. I don't know if they are the safest areas to be as a foreigner. You definitely want to be in a secure location if you are living on your own - find a gated community if you can. If you are planning to use public transportation, then check the bus schedules online https://www.bahamas.gov.bs/wps/wcm/connect/ee780aaf-f343-4352-a6c9-d95ca89cd7ae/RT+Dept.Official+Bus+Routes.pdf?MOD=AJPERES. Note that there is limited service on Sundays and the buses don't run after 6:30pm.

I also meant to comment on the suitcases of clothing. I believe they won't charge Customs/VAT on the used clothing and toiletries - I know I wasn't charged. However, the Customs Tariff Guide does provide for a Customs rate on used clothing. The Customs Agents are mostly looking for new items you are bringing in. For example, I had some new linens, a router, cordless phone, etc. that was in my luggage and I paid duties on the value in excess of $300. You are allowed a $300 exemption twice a year coming into the island.

Thanks for the information - will try finding an apartment in a gated community and I believe I will need a car so would welcome suggestions for reliable places from where I can get used cars or lease cars.

There are some individuals that sell reliable used cars they import from Japan or the USA. Decide on your budget and start watching the used car sales online to get familiar with what you get for your budget. It took me about three weeks to find a reliable vehicle for the price I wanted to pay and the features I was needing. Note that the roads here are poorly maintained so you'll want a vehicle that can deal with all the bumps and rough surfaces. Don't buy a Honda (Accord, Civic particularly) as they are the prime target for theft. Avoid leather as the heat and sun will make them uncomfortable. Keep in mind that cars get banged up a lot here - it's not unusual to see a nice shiny new car with dents and scratches. Customs adds about 65% duty on vehicle imports so you may get some sticker shock initially when you first start looking. That's why its best to look at the online ads first to become aware of the market. When you go to register the vehicle, be sure to have all your paperwork and the bill of sale has a "stamp" attached (25 cents I believe). I often see expats selling vehicles on this forum - that would be a good place to start. Good luck!
