Hello, we are moving to the south west part of new providence in September and are wondering about youth sports leagues for our children aged 9, 11 and 13. They played soccer and basketball back home. I heard that the schools don't all have sports teams but that it was played at a club level instead?
We also played on a mixed O35 team at home do they have that type of soccer league for the parents?
How safe would it be for is to join these leagues, will we end up playing games late at night in shady areas of the island?
Thanks for the help, we are very active people at home, children in sports almost every night of the week and we also play 2-3 times a week. My wife is worried we will get bored in Bahamas with the relaxed style of living. Also worried about safety concerns for her and our children.

Hi! I don't have children of my own but I know kids that went to school at Lyford Key and they have so many actives for the children to do there. I am sure it is the same for the other couple of private schools on the island. I wanted to recommend Nirvana Beach, this beach is the most populated, around 20 people weekday and more on the weekends. Its a great place for your family to hangout and feel safe. There is a little hut that is always open that you can order drinks and food. You can rent kayaks and other water activities. I snorkeled there weekly, there is great coral, with so many different fish you can see. And the best part is it is right off the water so if you buy sets for your kids its a free activity for them. The water is always warm and not many days with a lot of waves. Its the perfect water for floating, kayaking, snorkeling. The outdoor activities might be different from what your kids are use to but I am sure they will get the hang of the water. Another pretty populated beach is Cable Beach, not as much coral but I saw turtles almost every morning I went walking in the water. I would recommend your wife and kids staying at more of the populated beaches to make sure they are safe.

Hello and hope all is well and good as you prepare to relocate to Nassau.
We are relocating to Nassau in September as well. I have an 11 year old son that is very involved in athletics here in Charlotte, NC and I have had similar concerns regarding our transition back.
I have lived and worked in Nassau for 10 years previously, and know that there are a number of different soccer leagues for your children to participate in.
There are several leagues that practice and play out West and a few others that are located on the Eastern side of the island.
There is a FB page for the Bahamas Soccer Academy and I believe they are located out West at the Tambearly school; https://www.facebook.com/BAHAMAS-SOCCER-ACADEMY-314527566626/ The Western Warriors Soccer Club is one that I will look at for my son. I noticed a lot of diversity on the teams pictured and several of the families that my son once played T-ball with are still together and now playing soccer.
You may also want to check out the Bahamas Football Association, which appears to be a more competitive league with players that have qualified for the World Cup in 2013; http://bahamasfa.com/
As far as adult soccer, I am not certain. There is an adult flag football league that plays out East on Sundays.
In general, safety requires being aware and mindful of your surroundings.
Please email directly if you have any other questions or if you just want to connect as expat families making a similar transition. scogen312@gmail.com
All the best!
