Planning our move to nassau 2018

So great to find a forum that can potentially be so much help, thank you!!

So I myself have been to nassau (atlantis) on vaca for 3 years now. yet my wife and her family have been going for almost 14 years, have made alot of friends and great relationships on the island. Along with my wife finding some great contacts with some politicians in Nassau as well. I just got back from our years visit and before we had talked about moving but I we are ready to actually move.

We are young with no kids (I'm 28 shes 34) living in northern va where we have grown to hate the weather and the sicknesses that come along with the constant weather changes. She has been working for an international security, and i have been doing automotive jobs since I was 16. both have good schooling and education.

I'm doing as much research as I can but was hoping to meet some expats that have moved to Nassau or to any of the surrounding islands and just had a few questions.

- Was it difficult finding a suitable living situation?
- What areas are safe? expat friendly
- Did you find a job before moving or did you visit and find one while there?
- Was it hard as an expat to find a job, and where are the best place to look? the internet has been sparse for help.

I've applied to a few positions at the Baha Mar hotel and casino which hopefully actually open this year. but just wanted some other job advice's.

These are questions i can think of that I haven't really found a good answer to. most videos and blogs talk about all the awesome stuff about moving but i want some of the nitty gritty. any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Chris

Welcome I'm sure many people will offer advice and of course different people will have different opinions. Perhaps you can consider them all and make up your own mind.
So I'll kick off:
Finding accommodation was not difficult, there are many realtors who will help finding a rental. Many are online but my personal experience is the online adverts are a little on the expensive side. I have seen adverts for properties online that are 20% cheaper in real life. I am very happy to recommend Marilyn Ayearst +1 242 4248707, marilyn@bahamasislandsrealty.com she is very helpful and found me the exact place I wanted. But there are others too.

What I did was stay for two weeks in Melia and searched like crazy. I was also working full time so if you havent a job, it might take less time.

As for safe areas, most parts of New Prividence are reasonably safe if you dont get involved in gangs and /or domestic disputes. I like the West, but East is good too, I know people who live there and love it. I would recommend gated compounds but again, I know people happy and safe in ungated areas.

PI is excellent, but expensive I think. Also getting off or on the island at peak times is a b***h as theres only one bridge on and one off. Who want to just sit in a car for hours?

I had a job before I moved. I believe its difficult to find jobs as an expat, but I have no experience of this, others might help.

As far as internet goes, as the place is small, internet is really not as well used as say the UK (where I am from)

Warning, things are really expensive here.
