Health Care For Parents?

Greetings!
I've been asked to interview for a position @ the University of the Bahamas, but before I accept, I was hoping someone could help me with a question, My parents are elderly and my father is starting to develop the early stages of Alzheimers. They would likely move with me if I were to accept the position.

So, my question is this--how is the elder care in the Bahamas, and would they need to purchase private insurance if they moved with me?

Thank you!

Dear ProfX,

Congratulations! This is wonderful for you.

Unfortunately, the reality is that there are no proper resources for eldercare here. There are no proper nursing homes, and there are no properly licensed home care resources.

I do not want to deter you from moving forward, but the medical care and medical support resources here are extremely lacking.

Having said all this, you can definitely hire from abroad the nurses you may need for your parents. This would be the best alternative. You would need to vet them and obtain work permits for them, but this is very doable and likely the best for your parents.

As for insurance, you would need to purchase private insurance. Check on this site(expatexchange) for expat insurance offerings, and check within your home country to see what they offer to people who move to other countries.

Prof, feel free to PM me with any more detailed questions. Hope this helps.

Congratulations on your opportunity at UB.
Regarding senior care, you may want to consider hiring a PT or FT care giver.

I have considered doing the same for my elderly mom who is still in Charlotte, NC but considering a move to be with me in Nassau. I relocated in November.

I found a reputable site that has resources for care; http://www.greataupair.com/Senior_Caregiver_Service/Find_Senior_Caregiver/The+Bahamas.htm

As for insurance, most US companies won't cover services in the Bahamas.

There are many companies that provide coverage. I personally like Atlantic Medical. You may want to consider who the UB provider will be for your insurance and go from there.

When looking for housing consider a 3-4 bedroom in the event that a caretaker lives in with you and your parents.

Good luck with your interview!!!
