Hello all,
I'm a student from Canada going to be living in Dhaka starting in June. I'm really excited to see the country and surrounding region while I live here for the next seven months. I'm reading as much as I can on the culture and the people so that I'm not too shocked when I get in, but I know that I'll still be looking to meet people who are undergoing the same experiences I am while I am there.
I'm particularly interested to learn what places Europeans and Americans hang out in (I have been told to check out the American Club) and what sorts of things people in this community like to do for fun.
Hope to hear from some of you and perhaps to meet up with you when I arrive!
Sincerely, George

Hi George,
I hope you arrived Dhaka safely and already enjoying your stay there. I am a young professional (25 years old) from Jordan who has lived in Hong Kong, USA and Dubai. I am moving to Dhaka next week. I would like to share an apartment with other interns/expats.Since you probably went through the same room hunting experience, can you please share some contacts or advice to help me find a room asap? Or do you know of any available room around?
Sorry for the random message and I look forward to hearing (and perhaps meeting) you soon.
Cheers, Ahmad

Hello Ahmed,
Very nice to meet you!
Unfortunately I am not the best person to ask about these things as my apartment was actually pre-arranged for me. But I do have some other ex-pat friends here who live in boarding houses and so on that can be quite safe and reliable. Are you looking for something along the full-service lines? There are houses with cooks and cleaners and so on, or you can opt for the rougher end of things and find something similar to where I live, a one-bedroom apartment with gas stove and fan - comfortable, but sparse.
I'll talk to my friends today and see if anyone is looking for a roommate, or knows of a place for rent. My strong suggestion is that you find a place in the Banani, Gulshan, or Dhanmondi area, as these are nice, secure, and close to most of the things that ex-pats enjoy in Dhaka (including safe food and entertainment). If you can find a place in the Defense Officers Housing Societies (DOHS, which is what they call them all), then I'd go there. There's one in Baridara, Bonani, and Mokahali, and they're all very safe and quite pretty.
I'll do some sniffing around and see what I can dig up. Hope to see you when you arrive!
Sincerely, George
