" Hi there, I am moving to Brussels soon from America, and I would like to know what the average apartment rent is. I have two large dogs. I would like something fairly nice with good access to the metro, as I won''t have a car. What are good areas, with access to grocery stores and so forth? Also, just out of curiosity, what is the weather like in Brussels and how do people dress there? Is it casual, formal, or a mix? Thank you so much. tiffinitheisen@yahoo.com "

" Tiffini, My wife and I have the same questions you did last year. we hope to move to Brussels in August/Sep 2000. Looking for a two bedroom apt - furnished that will accept a 6 month lease (renewable for another 6 months. Can you provide any insight into the costs (utilities also). We may be working under NATO contract. Are you aware of any tax implications regarding that? Thank you. Fred Gahr gahrfam@worldnet.att.net "

" Don''t know anything about tax situation. It varies so much. There are tons of apts. There is a magazine called The Bulletin in Brussels. Do you have anyone who can send it to you? It is great for info on apts. They can vary greatly in price depending upon where you live. As low as $500 or as high as $2000. It is hard to find a six months lease, but you might be able to do so. Rent regulations are completely different here than in the states. Huge deposits, you have to pay for a licensed person to check out your apt. and note all the issues, defects, etc., then you pay when you leave for them to come assess all the damage you have done...... Hope this helps. ----- "

" Apartments in Brussel All of you looking for apartments in belgium. I have been living in europe for a long time, and now live in Belgium. The rent is really cheap if you don''t take the first thing, look, you can get a lot of space, in a good neighborhood, in center if you like (although other neighborhoods are seriously convieniant). If I were to change the prices to dollars, for ex: i live in a loft of 150 sqmeters and i pay what is around 600 dollars rent. That is what I paid for a studio in Seattle. If you search websites www.bruxelles.irisnet.be or www.belgimmo.com or www.pim.be or use the www.scoot.com search service and look through the realestate catagories..etc. It is very cheap, usually the websites are in english as well, but get yourself a cheap dutch or french dictionary to open your possibilties, belgium has no shortage of apt. and it is a great place to live.... " I went to Brussels in May and was able to look around with a realtor that my employer set me up with. I found an excellent furnished row house in Auderghem for 40,000 bf a month (no utilities included...and I understand they can be quite expensive. I was told by my employer that the place I got was the best ""furnished"" place she has seen (nice furniture, beds and appliances) as evidently the furniture is usually not nice. I was also informed that the standard lease is 3 years for unfurnished and 1 year for furnished (unless you are in a business apartment/hotel). There is some Belgian law that regulates this rental stuff. Also utility cost and companies are all completely regulated by the specific ""commune"" in which you live. I purchased a book put out the the American Women''s Club of Brussels called ""Hints for living in Belgium"". It is excellent and could answer all your questions. I think you can order one off of their web site which goes by the name of their club. Also, if you call the Belgian consulate in the States, they will send you a ""newcomers"" package if you tell them you are moving to Brussels. I think I got really lucky with the house...the location is so perfect for us as well. It might really pay to make a visit to Brussels to get a sense of things before you move there. Doesn''t NATO provide relocation assistance? We''re leaving in mid August but please feel free to contact me if you have more questions. I can be reached at this address or the one I have in Belgium: simont@isb.be. Good luck. Tracee "
