Hello, I have been doing my research and feel good about most of information I have learned. Question: I am a single lady 63, moving to Belize. What is your opinion on best place to live. Also, are there any places to get information on people that are looking to share expences. I won't be be moving for a few months and have time to get to know someone before I leave. Any information is appreciated. TY Kathryn

You've made a good choice countries - I think. After 3 years of visits we moved here permanently July 2nd of this year. It's been an experience. We've been writing to our friends and family a running narrative of our experiences. So far there are 5 "stories" and about another 5 planned. If you would like to have these stories and be on our list for the others just reply with your email and we'll get them out to you.

One question you might have: Is it safe for a single lady to move to Belize? In our opinion, yes. Of course, just like anywhere else in the world you need to watch where you go and be aware of what's going on around you. Good luck!

You ask where the best place is to live. That's a great question but also the toughest. It's kind of like asking what is the best car for you. Only you can answer that question. However, a little infomation that might help . . . If you are looking to completely (or mostly) retire you might like San Ignacio. It's quiet. That means nightlife is very limited. But like the rest of Belize there are places to go nearby that are great. If you are looking for a more exciting lifestyle then I'd suggest looking on the coast. Most everyone says to avoid living in Belize City and I agree with them. If money is a significant concern then San Ignacio is a very good place to consider. The coastal areas are all more expensive where things have built up. For us, we wanted quiet and on those time we want more excitement and such we can drive to the coast as it's only about 72 miles from here. The weather here is also a little cooler and the humidity is somewhat lower. Plus, we don't give hurricanes much thought as we are elevated and so far inland. Anyway, food for thought.

Hi! While I am no expert on Belize, I can tell you that there are some wonderful expats in the Corozal area. We just got back from viewing our lot in the Orchid Bay settlement, and we met some awesome folks. Get on the Yahoo groups and search for Corozal women's forum...It's a good place to start. We aren't ready to retire yet, but it was reassuring to visit and meet so many like-minded people. Gives hubby and me even more reason to look forward to the time when we can retire to Belize.

Hello Daisy Lover,

There are plenty of single woman over 60 on Ambergris Caye. There is a nice community, and a lot of activities here. It is easy to find a nice group of ladies to spend time with here. Many of these women hang around, or do volunteer work together, to keep busy.

I am pretty sure that there is a decent singles community in the San Ignacio area as well. It is a lovely community. And, as suggested in a prior post, get on the various forums to hear what people say about each region. I haven't hear others respond specifically about the "singles" in their locations, though...

I have not spent as much time in Corozal and Placentia, so don't know if there is much of an over 60s singles community in those locations. But there is a lot of action on Ambergris Caye, with people coming and going all the time. So it is easy to meet a lot of people here, and it is safe for a woman who is alone, as long as she is careful.

I know a number of singles our age who share rentals here on the island. But I would strongly discourage you from committing to share a living space with someone you don't know well. Come here and check it out first. Get to know people first. You will meet people and learn of good shared opportunities and housesitting gigs. But if you rent with someone you don't know well, you could end up stuck in a situation with a less than stable person. That could ruin your experience in paradise quickly. Would you move into a rental in a big city in the USA with someone you don't know? Keep that in mind when you move here...

We also have a ladies group that meets every 3rd Thursday at noon for lunch. A good networking and chance to meet the community. We meet this Thursday.

we have shipped several containers to belize through out the yrs,,,, pack heavy boxes on the bottom and lighter on the top,,when you get it all packed use load locks or band togeather w/ straping to prevent shifting in transent,,,keep in mind it coming by boat,,,,also i dont know where you are shipping from ,but if you are on the east coast make sure your container is shipped through port everglades,,, ships out on friday, arrives in bz on monday and out of customs on thursday, also make sure you have a good broker in bz city to help you get it out of customs fast, a broker will make the process be smooth as silk,,,placenciabeachhouse.com

I'm a 66 year old teenager just out of a 2nd marriage and would like to know the same question answered for single guys. Is there a lot of social life where one can mate a potential mate? What areas are best for that

I would recommend either San Pedro or Hopkins. If you are interested in retiring in Belize, the Qualified Retired Persons Program could be useful for you. More information can be found here: http://www.easetaxburden.com/retirement.html
Hope this helps

I'm single now and I was going to move there with my husband but we broke up. I still want to move there. But I don't have a portable income yet. I think I might be able to get a work permit because I'm a speech pathologist and there is only 1 other SLP there in the whole country..

Gwennie, this thread is 4 yrs old, havent seen any of the posters on here for ages. Good luck with getting a work permit, you may have to form a Co. as the Gov. is unlikely to employ you.

I live in Corozol at times. I am married, but I moved down there by myself for a while. My husband is not yet retired. There isn't much to do in Corozol but that is why I like it. Some of those Gringas like to hang out on the bay and shoot darts. Some of them have a little gardening club I believe. Gardening down there is a blast. I can be very social and I can exist by myself . I prefer to do my own thing according to my own schedule. Those other Gringas seem to have a lively group and enjoy themselves a lot. Some of those old expats may hit on you, I wasn't impressed but befriended some of them anyway. You really ought to go rent a month or so in a few places to get a feel for it. I can basically be as happy as I choose to be where ever I am. It really is a lot about attitude and what you choose to make out of something.......Happy Travels..

I have been in Belize since April of this year. I planned on one area originally, but I have been traveling throughout the coastal towns and have found the more you live in and embrace each town for its culture and the amenities you need that you can make a confident decision for yourself.

bobbyveee
  9/22/2016 17:56 EST

Hi Patricia. Ypou got it absolutely right, Hit nail on the head etc etc. You have to come and stay , not days but wks , each place, each season is so different , you have to make the decision , NO ONE ELSE can make these choices of where you want to settle. Have a great time and best of luck.

Good luck Joseph. Finding good ingredients on a regular basis is the hardest thing in Belize, creates all kinds of problems for decent chefs, you'll be bald in a very short time, atleast you wont need a hairnet then, !!! Good luck.

Hi. I am also single and 63 years old. I moved to Placencia in March of 2015 and haven't stopped smiling yet. I feel as though I am on vacation. I visited twice. Than moved with 1 suitcase. I live on the water and my rent is 500 per month. You can rent for less if not on the sea. My utilities are About 50 per month. For example my water bill is $10 bz which means $5us. I feel safe and happy. Plus it is a small village.
