I saw a video with John McAfee, the rich software developer. He said that a politician visited him and tried to get a political CONTRIBUTION out of him. When he refused, the politician sent more than 40 soldiers to his house to persuade him to change his mind. Is this kind of thing widespread? Do regular American expats have to contend with this kind of thing?

You need to read more about the story and John McAfee and his time in Belize. All Belizeans and expats watched in fascination as to his exploits. The whole situation started with the murder of a close friend of his - JM was wanted for questioning by the police about the circumstances surrounding JM and his friend. That's what put JM on the run where he promptly fled to Guatemala.... check out the rest of the tale online!
To answer your question then NO! I cannot imagine any Americans, Canadians or British putting up with that sort of treatment in Belize or any other country for that matter.

But you will get shaken down by petty officals , ie if your importing , crossing a border with goods, asking the police to investigate a burglary at your home. One of the Gov. ministers has just been found selling citizenships. Monies are constantly flowing into politicians pockets. Belize is CORRUPT, because its POOR

The gentleman you named does not enjoy a good reputation for many good reasons. His neighbors were glad to see him go. He is not rich either, he went thru his money real fast and only had change left when he fled Belize. Belize has its problems but with him gone, there is one less.

Daisy, just google 'How corrupt is Belize' you will see what i mean, its the locals who are being robbed, not expats. The Americas, Africa and the ols eastern bloc countries are all at it. Im glad you like my blogs, thx

You need to see the "bigger" picture on this subject. There is much more to read and not his version. And take his version with a grain of salt. And you have nothing to worry about.

Lenny, thats all im trying to get people to do , read about stuff, be open minded , take the rose tinted glasses off. But as i said, it doesnt really impinge on Expats, so dont know what you mean about'his version' its not a version, its FACT and well documented.

The Media Circus in the US on this matter is all about "him"
If you lived in Belize as I do, know some of his ex-neighbors, there is another side to this.. He hid underground literally, illegally left Belize, "convinced" Guatemala to send him to the US. All this while a US citizen is dead. He is still wanted for questioning.

He lived only a few miles up the road from us. Still cant understand why hes not been extradited for questioning into the murder. He's a total screwball
