Mosquitos

HI, We are considering Orchid Bay development as a destination for retirement. We have heard that it has a problem with mosquitoes, but the salespeople won't answer my questions regarding it. Anyone live there or know about this. If it is so, what do people do to survive? I am allergic to bug bites.

Belize is a low laying country in the tropics with lots of standing water , therefore you will get mossies. The wind is the most effective weapon against them, they like still air. Be prepared to buy lots of DEET and Off . Getting a mossy free area is just about impossible in Belize. Obviously you need a property with bug screens over windows and doors, but thats about the best you can do.

There are mosquitos (or other bugs) just about everywhere in Belize, in varying numbers. This is in the tropics - it's just a part of life. You can either use lots of insect repellent, or you can stay inside on calm days. On breezy days they tend to not be a problem. My own personal theory/experience with mosquitos is that if you can 'suck it up' for a few weeks your body gets used to the bites (don't scratch!), and then you will stop being bothered by them. You may still get bitten, but you'll have no reaction to the bites. For sandflies - the other bug that is very annoying - a light application of oil (coconut oil, baby oil, whatever) stops them biting. You only need a little, you don't have to be an oil slick, and you'll be fine.

for several decades, I have known that high dose thiamine[ B1] gives one's skin an oder mosquitos don't like, yet cant be smelled by humans. I used it very successfully up in Alaska where those buggers are BIG and nasty!

We live in the middle of the jungle in Cayo and there are very few mosis here. We designed our house build with fly screen doors and they were going to be the last thing we added to the house. That was 10 years ago and we never did add them. Thanks to the limestone rocks and being in a valley, all that water just flows away and half an hour after a huge downpour you would barely know it has rained here. My husband and I hate getting bitten by insects - we always said why would we emigrate to Belize to be miserable! I notice them more in Belize City or any of the towns where concrete development has meant that water does not flow completely away (drains etc).

We have been here longer than a few weeks but I still get eaten up with Mosquitos on calm days/evenings if I don't use repellent. I try just to stay in on those days. I think I am a mosquito magnet. Luckily here in Corozal we do not have the black flies. What everyone says is true, this is a tropical environment and there are lots of bugs of all kinds.

Hi,
What about Bot Flies. How bad are they along the coastal areas, say Corozal.
Had a friend visit Belize and ended up with one, but he was also in the jungle. Thanks

Its the Human Bot fly your talking about , there are many varieties. Its pretty rare to get eggs laid in you , but they can be removed, just not very nice. The whole of Central America has them . I think your worrying far too much about bugs etc. Your much more likely to be bitten by a venemous spider or snake in the US than a Bot fly in Belize

Not an issue across the water from Orchid Bay at Cerros Sands. Check us out, we have seafront and channel parcels as well. Beachviews start at $17,770 for 1/4 acre. We have homes and models from 1200 to 4500 square feet at this time. A 1600 sq ft channel home "custom" is only $169,000.

By the way I am building at Cerros Sands and spend a ton of time on-site. I have lived in Belize for over 12 years.

We were out that way the other day. How do you get your electricity? Do you use a generator? It's really pretty out there but very remote.

Thanks, I will try B1. What dosage do you take daily? All at once or split up?

snakeoildoc

try 500 mg. if that doesn't do it I feel 1000mg or 1gm would be fine. That is what I took in AK many years ago. Look up the toxicity factor if on it long term, but feel it is safe.

Bucki. If you go to FAQ on the web site of Cerros sands it will tell you all about elec. sewage etc. all self contained and generated and using rainwater. Ive friends on the AC lagoon who do this, works very well, but was very very expensive to buy and install, a lot of deep charge batteries needed etc etc

Also Bucki, there are lots of architects plans for homes there, but no prices !!!! Ask Lenny for a guideline , but be sure to be sitting down !!!!
