I am looking for information concerning living in Belize from Nov thru April. My budget is $1450 per month. I would like to be within walking distance of town and Ocean or River. I would like to be able to buy fish and fruits and vegetables from local markets. Fans and or air conditioning would be a must. I am wondering also about weather conditions, safety, and comfort since i will be moving with my wife. We are in our 60s so health care is important also Thanks Jim

I just arrived this week, my 3rd visit, and 2nd to San Ignacio. Great place, great people, and I suspect would fit your budget depending on how luxurious you want to live. CasaBlanca[botique] Hotel is a good starter, where Betty, owner, can currently reco a 2bdr fully furnished apt. That is more than I need or I would hop on it. Crime? like anywhere be careful and be cautious how you behave.

A/C is un-necessary in the period your talking about, if you run a/c it'll cost you about $450usd /month. Its also the high season, prices double. The Cayes are probably beyond your price range, but the most fun and most westernised, Sterer clear of Belize City, San I , placencia or Corozal are your main options. On the Cayes yopu dont need transport, you may elsewhere , unless you just want to stay in one place. All the good accomodation will have gone long ago. Good luck

It is simple maths, US$50 x 1 Day = US$1500 a month X 2 people = US$3000 a month to live in San Pedro. LOL

There are places in Belize to live that are very reasonable but AC (San Pedro) and Placencia are not two of them. Corozal is very reasonable and close to Mexico. We love it here.

Hi Buckiboa. They want somewhere from Nov to April, so next month !!!! What are their chances of finding a self catering apartment with a/c or fans in your area? All in for $1450 including food etc

Bobbyveee they might still be able find a place to rent relatively cheap in town but they would not be able to run air conditioning if that is all the income they have. You know how expensive electricity is. We run AC and fans because I still have issues with the heat here but it cost us a fortune to do so. If they live like the Belizeans and just use fans and don't eat out, they might be able to make it on their limited income. I know of some places that rent for $550Bz/month. Don't know how long the people want to rent it out though. So, it would be hard but not impossible I guess.

Although our beach bungalow was airconned we only used it a few times at night when it was oppressive, we had ceiling fans in all rooms and had two curved air pedestal fans, and kept all our windows open, so atleast had thro' air. People seem to leave finding accommodation till the last minute, when i first came i rented long term then booked my flights. You can find so much on the internet , but many are too lazy or just think Belize is full of welcoming arms offering cheap everything WRONG

True Bobbyveee. We have found, for us anyway, that we can live for less here than we did the US, but it all depends on your life style. Belize is not for everyone and I tell my friends back in the states it is a lot like the US was back in the 50's. Here in Corozal the Internet is down as much as it is up and our power goes out at least three times a month if not more. Most of the roads are not paved and have pot holes large enough to swallow your car if you are not careful. Belize is beautiful but it is not all is the post card picture you see in advertisements.

Hi Buckiboa. Thats the trouble, the adverts you see on TV in the USA make it look like everything is a paradise. It just isnt, you have to make your own Utopia and shrug your shoulders when the power or internet goes out. Its no good coming here and thinking its the garden of Eden, too many damn 'snakes' around LOL

You are so right Bobbyveee! Is the COL on St. Lucia more or less than here in Belize? I am researching different areas. If we can live somewhere else even less than here, we will check it out. I know Ecuador is less but our Spanish is not that good. Panama is another option but then you have the language barrier again. I'm going to your St. Lucia forum to see what all you have put out there.
