We want to rent a car and explore locations in Belize to live. Are there any hotels which have wheelchair accessible rooms?
Where would you suggest staying for a central location?
Thank you for suggestions, Richard

Hi - not many available, but not impossible. What areas are you looking at?

Cayes, Hopkins and Placencia are more challenging as they are sandy road/path environments.

Belize is not a very wheel chair friendly country. Not a hope of using on the Cayes, theres no sidewalks and entrances to everything is up steps. I think you would find much of the country like that.

Im assuming your bringing a folding push type wheel chair. All planes into Belize bus and debus via steps , you would need to make arrangements for assistance

Thank you for replying. I am beginning to understand the lodging is going to be difficult. We were thinking of being centrally located on or near the East coast so we could explore the country in a limited manner by rent car.
All the best,
Richard

We really appreciate your warning about the sand, no sidewalks, and steps, etc. Also places to stay away from. Very helpful. That is good to know and we will take heed.
Thank you,
Richard

One other thing comes to mind, I don't remember seeing anywhere, including some pretty plush restaurants any toilet facilities for disabled people , ie wheelchair accessable . I don't know how important this would be to you, but forewarned is forearmed . Good luck

Please know we are not trying to be negative about wheelchair usage. We live in Corozal and to be honest, I have only seen one wheelchair ramp and that is to my dentist office. Some stores, restaurants, etc. would be accessible after you get up the curb from the road. I believe some hotels would also have ground level rooms you might be able get to as well. But what is being said about the sand and rutted roads is sad but true. Here in Corozal I have never seen anyone in a wheelchair though I imagine there are those who require them. You just don't see them out and about. Good luck on your trip.

Tony's Inn just east of Corozal a couple blocks has decent first floor rooms that work for wheelchairs--my wife uses a power chair. They also have a decent restaurant and bar. All reasonably priced.
Is yours chair power or manual?

Thank you so much for this information. To answer your question --- I thought saying a "wheelchair" would be easiest. However, I have an electric scooter, a "Go-Go" It is quite small at 105 lbs, but the smaller front wheels are only 2" wide and 7" in diameter. However in Nicaragua's I could ride on the packed sand below high tide without any problem, and someone always gave me a push if I got stuck. I can probably go where a bicycle goes. Also there is usually a kind person or two to help me up a curb when necessary. FYI I can walk about a hundred yards with my walker before resting. Your wife's experiences with her chair must be valuable. We will check out Tony's and Corozal Town. It looks like a lovely location.
All the best, Richard

You are kind to reply. I would much rather know the accessibility facts ahead of time. My electric scooter, a "Go-Go", is quite small at 105 lbs, but the smaller front wheels are only 2" wide and 7" in diameter. However in Nicaragua I could ride on the packed sand below high tide without any problem, and someone always gave me a push if I got stuck. I can probably go where a bicycle goes. Thanks again for all of this info. We will check out some hotels there.

Ralph,
Thanks so much for putting us onto Tony's. We are looking closely there and it might work but NO pool for me to swim in is a bummer, and I cannot tell if the beach to the sea is accessible in my walker.. Could you give me a phone number to call you for a few more details about Tony's and Belize in general?
Cheers,
Richard
