Its not seaweed its sea grass, it grows between the reef and the shore. Pretty much everywhere

It's Sargassum, and it's just bad timing for you unfortunately. It happens a couple of times a year. All the beaches are suffering. Take a trip inland, go visit at a hotel with a pool, or move further up the Sittee River. If you get the chance come back in a few months and it'll be picture perfect again.

Been reading reports that the strong Trade winds and change in the Atlantic currents are bringing in Sargassum from the Sargasso sea. On some Texas beaches they have had so much they are using bulldozers to remove it . It gives of a 'bad egg' smell as it dries Phew !!!

It stinks here on the beach in San Pedro and last week we had bulldozers and dump trucks all morning. The sea grass is back and more than before.

So there are times of the year then when the beaches are clear and the water is clear and the pretty blue/green you see in pictures? Just came from Placencia and the entire shores were lined with the washed up brown grass and water was completely brown and trashy near the beach. Not the beautiful beaches and warm beautiful green/blue waters I pictured. Warm, yes. Fantastically warm. Beautiful. Not so much. Sure hoping to hear it WILL be soon.

I would not call what Belize has A BEACH….Its sort of dirt between the water and jungle…The reef stops most waves that form real beaches. Sea grass is every place and thnk god it is or the reef would have been gone years ago from the banana farmers pesticides

The sea grass is terrible and stinks so bad. I thought the beaches would be beautiful but terrible. I am headed out in a week. All the ads are misleading. Belize is very expensive and not worth it.

The problem with the washed up Sargassum sea weed is thro out most of the Caribbean, we even had on St Lucia , especially on the Atlantic side. And Belize isn't a beach holiday country, and yes , many if not all the adverts on TV and in mags are very misleading .

It's terrible, I am leaving. The beaches stink, can't go into the water for the sea grass. The food, liquor, wine is way over priced and no choices. Paying 400.00 more than I did in Ireland for my apartment and not as nice. So many places charge for using a credit card.

Pamela, yes, it doesn't sound like Belize is for you.

I think a big problem is the literature and TV adverts put out by Belize are way, way over the top, nothing like the country in general, a lot of people seem to be realizing they are getting conned. Belize is treading a dangerous path, commercially they are already suffering

The ads make Belize look great, very misleading. I have not found one thing true. That's ok, I am able to move on to hopefully a better place. I just want people not to expect much.

I can't speak for any other place or time, but this year, after 5 years in the country, I noticed how the beaches (from Hopkins to Punta Ycacos, Placencia being in the middle of that stretch) got unbelievably filthy for a 3 week period, even in Placencia which normally HAS beautiful clean beaches. To a lesser extend it happens again as of June 15th onward, when the wind started blowing after the first 2 weeks of June were very calm. Never seen it before, but yes it certainly happened this year.
