Why English in Belize can be a LIfe Saver

Staying at the Maya Hotel on the south side of Corozal and Chetumal Bay is only about 70 yards away - too bad across a fairly busy road - but it has a long concrete seawall that runs the length of town with breaks here and there to allow access. The best places to swim are where there are large breaks and some kind of "beach" but don't think sandy white beach that's not Corozal although the bay is pretty, no doubt.
So my friend here Tim went about 4PM for a swim before dinner yesterday traipsing across the road in our water shoes (bring them if you want to swim here to protect feet) and we noticed right away that all the Belizeans especially on Sundays who swim there usually full of Belizean kids splashing around are standing on the shore looking at the water.
We look at each other?
"I'll ask them what's up," says Tim
"Good idea," I agree, "something ain't right". I'm looking out at the water which is less choppy than I've seen it since I've been here little over a week. Swimming here is not the right word since the strong fetch waves from the large shallow bay slam against the seawall so it's kind of more like floundering around inside a washing machine than swimming but still feels awfully good LOL.
The Belizeans say, "Croc in the water," pointing.
Glad we asked! I was told crocs didn't come into this area?
So two Belizean lessons I think here: 1) English speaking can be a life saver. 2) Never be one of those ugly (Americans - you Canadians do not ever have to read this part doesn't apply to you LOL) and assume you know more about Belize than the Belizeans
