I've been looking at lots of places outside the US where my funds go the farthest, and life is safe and calm. My focus is on Placencia, Belize. Do any of you live there. Got info about there?
I am alone. I need a simple place to bathe, sleep and cook a bit now and then. Must have internet and AC would be nice, but not a must.

We live here in Placencia and think its the best place for us. traffic/Crime etc are low people are friendly , plenty of great restaurants , stores to buy things...I have found little that is not available here. If you come down see for yourself that is the best way. Be happy to steer you in the right direction .

Well thank you. I'd like to come down for a month and stay. I was in Belize in the '80's. I know a lot has changed since then. I visited someone who lived out west of Punta Gorda. I loved it.
I just want a room for a month. A place where I can sleep, bathe, etc. Internet a must. AC would be good, not a must.
I think I'm a quite pleasant person to have around. So hopefully I can meet some new friends there, and find my own place in paradise. ;)

Lahry:
Same here. Privately e-mailing you also. Placencia is cool, all kinds of different people. Relaxed. I am on my 2nd project there; 1st a mini storage and 2nd a small island for small groups. I feel free here, can be my self (on the extrovert side) without reservation. Definitely worth a look.

Hey thanks so much, Fred. I've looked at some youtube videos on the place. That only encouraged me more. :)
I like to sing, and I'm really good at it. I can sing Merle Haggard to Michael Bolton. I have accompaniment tracks on my laptop. Any venues to sing for the expats down there?

I have lived in Placencia for 6 years, and run Placencia Property Rentals - long and short term properties. This is one of the more expensive places in Belize, but also one of the more desirable. Lots of expats choose the settle here, either full-time or as 'snowbirds'. There's a good open mic every week at The Flying Pig, plus a few other pop-up options around the village.

I can think of 3 places. If not mistaken the Barefoot Bar, right on the beach reserves Tuesday and/or Wednesday for 'local' talent (or ex-pat visitors). We have hooked up some of our guests to play locally.

Patrick's place, the Flying Pig, yeah that one also. Yes, Placencia is a bit expensive, no doubt; I get the impression it can use more places in the medium range. ($500US or so per month).

Would any of you care to recommend a an option other than Placencia? keep in mind I really like to snorkel, and I want to get scuba certified. :)

Ambergris caye is the snorkeling centre of Belize, also the party place to sing and enjoy, many expats, lots to do, but it all comes at a price. My wife was a dive instructor there for 13 yrs. But AC is probably the most expensive place in Belize .

Ok, thanks. I will just need a one room flat. A place to sleep and bathe, laundry service near by, street food and water. Internet is a must, but can likely get by with local hotspots maybe?

I know how to stroke the locals. Don't take me long to make friends that care. Looking forward to it.

Weather Report, Placencia Belize
(7/14/2015)

.... You're Trusted Source for up to date Jellyfish reports since June of 2015 smile emoticon ...

Out early this morning just after dawn the sun risen up from the sea. Partly cloudy skies and a few sprinkles. The requisite dozen different bird calls I can hear at once all around as I walk, singing, screeching, screaming filling the air with bird life. The air unusually still and the sea flat calm like God has turned off His enormous fan evidently kept well out to sea where we cannot see it? I notice the effect as it seems much hotter than usual yet the air temperature is about the same.

Negative for Jellyfish! Thank God for little favors, Friends!

Walking as the village comes alive around me with mostly Belizeans punctuated here and there with an early rising Gringo like myself, digging the vibe coming as I do from having been traumatized by life in suburban America, it surely does feel like paradise, alright. Peaceful. Calm. Men and women going about their work days. Construction workers, vendors of all kinds, banker, cooks, plumbers and cops. Just exactly like in AnyWhere Elseville in he world.

The energy of it all is something I think you must feel bodily for yourself especially over at least some length of time this pulse of life Belizean Style, the rhythm of the days here from dawn to dusk, from dusk to dawn, which here to me relative to the frenetic pace of life I have lived is relatively speaking more like meditative deep breathing easily yet deeply in and out tasting this amazing sea air. Days, weeks, years spent here under the constant onslaught of paradise I am not surprised to find are healing and strengthening of body, mind and soul.

While the cultural differences are huge I feel and in no way wish to diminish how important that is to acknowledge hopefully so conscious intention to bridge this in some way is focused? But what continuously impresses me is just how alike everyone in the world really is? Most of us throughout the world, the vast majority, we just want to live our lives and raise our families and maybe do a little good while we are here all the while praying that we do no harm? We are much more alike than different, it appears.

Perhaps the most important Gringo Ritual here is the greeting ritual (first time meeting) wherein names are exchanged followed by mutual inquiries about the others home of origin. I find this charming as hell always have I thought of Ernie Pyle the WWII reporter. Famous for his two questions: 1) what's your name, Son? 2) where you from, Son. So I can dig it, no disrespect.

But maybe in the future, I'll say that I'm Dave, a world citizen.
