Thank you Bobby for your insight. I've learned a great deal from this forum. Coming to Belize in August with my daughter to check it all out for ourselves. We live in Northern California now but I want to retire somewhere in Belize for a simpler life. Got to see it all first before any commitments are made, right?

You got that right. You cant beat time on the ground, eyes and ears wide open. Not sure life in Belize is simpler, certainly different. Not a lot of infrastructure, and what you take for granted in USA you cant in Belize. Enjoy your exploration

HI BV, I started out my earlier career in Wildlife Biology working in quite rural areas so living without is not new to me. I've lived on 20 acres in the country for the last 14 years on propane, a well and dirt roads, I think the biggest thing that might annoy me is the bugs. Thanks for your comments! It's nice to meet people who live in Belize and know so much.

Just remember that until a few yrs ago, Belize was the chosen area of the British Army for the Jungle Warfare School. They didnt choose it because it was nice and pleasant. But because it was wet, steamy and bug ridden. And hot

I am with bobby on the empty, but very exciting constant promises, that's for sure. It is a two-edged sword, there is much progress going on now in Belize no doubt, but everything happens slooowwwly. In a way, thank God. That is why it is still 'new', or many areas are.

On the other hand, if a westener (most western nations are mature/developed with supreme order) is looking for the same amenities as 'home', why bother leaving it, since the new place will be the same as 'home'.

Please keep in mind, there are many areas IN Belize, ranging from jungle to beaches, from hot/steamy to cool even in summer.

I'm curious about the hospitals because I am a Respiratory Therapist in California and once I retire, it might be nice to be able to work a little in Belize. It might be one of those rare jobs non-Belizeans could do. I noticed an opening in Belize City for an RT, but I'm not interested in Belize City.

The hospital in BC is the main hospital for Belize. So not a lot of choice. Belize is short on hospitals and schools, the gov. certainly drags its feet. A lot of money is squandered on unnecessary projects.

The old NEW HOSPITAL will be built when the cow jumps over the moon.

Mocha,

Basically THE hospital is in. bC (and I would say most expatsnDON'T want to live there - Detroit might be more congenial. The rest of the country is great, welcoming and basically easy-going, friendly, helpful people (I think the people in Belize might be the most helpful, friendly people in any country that I have been to (which is over 30-35). With that said, there is little to NO infrastructure here. Great place to be younger or middle aged, aging but not OLD as health facilities / capabilities are limited and especially in other places outside BC, a general practitioners nurse may be a great thing to get a job, but you are OVER QUALIFIED and looking for a job that just really doesn't exist outside BC, except maybe oAmbergris Caye since so many Americans and CAnadians live there, although still no real hospital there.
