$2400 us per month

Hello,
Although I am still able to get around I have been ruled permanently disabled by my drs here in the us.
Having good disability insurance I am wondering is it reasonable to think my wife and I could live in Belize on that?

I clear about $2400 USD a month.
We are thinking maybe we can both live on that and my wife quit working too.

We are simple people and frugal :)

Thanks for your time.

Yes you could, but you need to check out the country before you make a final decision, medical stuff here is not very good, don't know what you might need in a hurry. You also need to check if your disability pay will continue after you leave USA. Good luck

Bobbyvee gives good advice. If you're talking about US Social Security Disability, your best bet would be to contact your local Social Security office and talk to them. In the meantime, you might want to have a look at these publications:

https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10137.pdf

https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10153.pdf

The first one talks about receiving US Social Security payments when you live outside the US. The second talks about eligibility for SSDI benefits in general.

Based on what I've read, you shouldn't have any problems if I understand your situation. But I don't work for the Social Security Administration and my opinion really means squat. As arcane as some US Social Security rules and regulations can be, I'd definitely recommend talking to the SSA before you make an emigration decision.

Good advice, triple check on benefits, nothing to loose. As for $2400 a month. that is precisely what I incur for my own life here. The budget always says less every month, but there is always something that needs updating or replacement and ends up pushing it to that $2400 figure.

Yes Fred, its always the wine stock that needs replacing, another high value commodity over here, upto 6x the price of the same wine in USA

In my case is my boat, that 'hole in the water to sink money into', I swear fishing is 'expensive. the equipment side that is. The actual catching never changes.

Square Grouper as in Sea Lottery? :D

I made the island perfectly round, nothing ever gets stuck on it, my odds are 'impossible'.

I have checked on the income end. Very carefully.

To be honest not sure we can do a lot better than staying here in Vegas,
Thinking of doing some recon to see if that part of the world is even an option. Shure the view and the weather is the dream but how about the reality.
I have arthritis of the spine and the hot dry weather sure is better than the frozen MN climate.

Wondering about how we want to spend the rest of our lives....

So where does one start,
Thinking a trip to scope out an area in about 12-18 months .

So I would like to find good candidates and I always hear Belize near the top of the list.

So any nudge in the right direction...there si so much info

Robojester, you should definitely be able to live on that kind of money here in Belize. But you will also definitely want to come and spend at least a month here, to see if hot and humid feels good to you!

'Wondering about how we want to spend the rest of our lives....'

Good for you for at least contemplating - 'what's next'. No sense retiring to die, and its boring doing the same thing the rest of life, which to me is like then 'waiting to die'. LoL

Having said that, the US is a good base once one is older, predictable, safe, dependable, medical services, etc etc. But there are a lot more places to see, interesting, exotic, etc etc. The answer -

Travel! A month here and another there, as finances and energy permits may be the best approach and combination. Planned well, it could be inexpensive. See AirBnB and VRBO, a different way to visit interesting places. Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Chile, just to name a few in this neck of the woods.

We've lived around the world from Oz to Belize. Sold up on Ambergris caye, sold up in Tax, have the family home in BOURNEMOUTH UK, bought on the Natural coast in Fl. , at present in St Lucia, wonderful place, somewhere on the Med .next yr, Oz the following, using Fl. As the base, cheap, safe, has all we both want, love travel, so basing oneself in a 3rd world country stopped making good sense as we neared our 70's. We want to live our lives, like Fred says not find somewhere to die, slide out of this world disgracefully!!!
