I am a retired healthcare professional that is interested in retiring to your beautiful paradise. I am interested in supplementing my income with a little part time work in a hospital setting. Where are the hospitals located? How large are they?

Americans can't work as employees in Belize. You can own a business however. They'll make an exception and allow you to work if you have a skill they don't have in the country such as teaching something at the university.

Check on a permit to work here , It has been covered at least weekly on all the forums. NOT likely.

Your questions are best answered by first taking a look at what we have in reference to facilities also getting a work permit in the health sector would first have to be approved and then vetted by both labor department and by ministry of health or the Belize Medical and Dental Union try making contact with private institutions and they would help facilitate your entry into your request.

I would not be inquiring if my skills were not something that is very much needed. My question was, where are the hospitals in Belize?

Yes, I can read. My skills are needed everywhere and in fact, are in great demand even in the states. My question was, where are the hospitals are in Belize. Trust me, I will not be looking to replace anyone in the tourist business.

Hi ,the main hospital for Belize is in BC, They basically don't hire outside Caricom, and the hospitals are fairly basic. Without a work permit you won't work . I've know a few good medical people bang their heads against brick walls because of the way things are here.

dlsykestabal - it is not about replacing anyone in the tourist business, it is whether the government or private sector is willing to spend money on a work permit for you, and whether immigration/labour department decide if your particular skill set is something a Belizean cannot do.

All non-residents and non-citizens must have a work permit to work. This can be employer sponsored or a self-employment work permit. Only immigration and the labour department can issue these. It is up to them to decide if your skills are something that is needed here. Rates of pay are very low compared to what you are used to - US$25/day is the average wage. Minimum wage is less than $2/hour. Private sector will pay more, but still considerably less than you are probably expecting.

There are hospitals in all the districts - Punta Gorda, Dangriga, Belmopan, Belize City all have public hospitals, and there are a couple of private clinics as well - Belize Healthcare Partners and Belize Medical Associates both in Belize City. I suggest you contact them direct as well as Ministry of Health to see what kind of need they have, and whether they can help you.

Thank you melissajane for your response. That was what I was looking for, something with substance and not just a brush-off. I appreciate the info. I realize the pay will be much less, but it is more about helping others and spending my spare time. Thank you.

Bobbyveee, that's sad to know. I would think most places would appreciate workers with good skills such as healthcare workers.
