African American moving to Belize

Hi. My family is looking to move to Belize. We are African American looking for a simple life where we can garden, swim and live a peaceful, laid back lifestyle. I have read a lot, but there is nothing like being able to ask my own questions. I have no fantasies about a perfect life. However, for many years I've contemplated this type of move, separating myself from the stress of life in America...rush, rush, rush. WHAT I DO KNOW...Everyone has made it clear that bugs may be an issue in Belize. I was raised in South Alabama and I am used to bugs and the threat of hurricanes and tornadoes. Can anyone tell me of an area in Belize that is not too far inland, quiet, good for gardening and not too expensive? What is the best, cheapest way to communicate with my family in the U.S.? We're bringing our dogs, a Schnauzer and a German Shepherd...any need to knows?? Thank you in advance!

Hi. Sounds like you might like the Placencia area. The best growing area is Cato, but too far inland.
Easiest way to communicate with you the outside world is internet and Skype' there care many alternatives these days. Good luck

Your question has a broad answer would suggest looking at a map then deciding what do yo
u consider not too far from the coast.

bobbyveee
  1/9/2016 16:32 EST

Also remember the roads aren't wonderful and you will certainly need a vehicle. The nearer the coast the more relief you get from the trade winds. I would suggest renting in an area you think you might like and stay around 6 months and see if you get a good feel.

I am thinking Corozal or Progresso might be best for me. I won't have a huge amount/month. Typically about 1600/US. I will have to rent. 70 yr old female. I want to be close to the ocean, have an opportunity to volunteer. I will have an older, but reliable sedan to drive down. Would Dec. Or Jan be a good time to move from Dallas area?
Thanks to everyone for their opinions.

Thanks to both of you! We are excited and nervous. My oldest daughter and I have decided to come and look around for what might suit us best, I have looked at the maps over and over hoping that some place would just jump out and say PICK ME!! :-) I thought Alabama in Stann Creek was a sign but there's not much info on THAT particular place. I will keep looking and studying. Thanks again!!!

I am so excited to start this journey. Can't wait to visit. I think that will give us a better idea of which area we'd like to live in. Renting for a while is a good idea , too...just to give ourselves time to get a feel for the area and go from there.

Hi ! I'm looking to do the same. From what research I've done, Placentia seems touristy but the Cayo district looks promising - alot of gardening opportunity. It's a small country, I think if you were to move inland, it wouldn't be too tough to drive to the coast for a weekend. We're going on 2/14 /16 for a couple weeks and meeting with a realtor to look at a few properties in Cayo. I know - it's really difficult to figure out where you want to look. I have a stack of books a mile high . I don't have the luxury of renting for months to figure out where I want to live. I can only do short trips. This blog is somewhat informative but different people want different kinds of places to live. We want to find someplace sort of rural but don't want to go full blown National Geographic. Electricity, internet, running water, and roads are kind of nice to have.

Polopaula I hope you keep in touch to let us know how your journey goes.
Debbie Appelman it sounds as if we are looking for the same things. I adapt well if I don't have those things, but running water is a necessity! :-)

Running water is a luxury, many places collect rainwater for household use and buy bottled water to drink.

Say it ain't so BobbyVeee?! Welllll my grandparents did it...I'm sure I can too if need be. After damaging hurricanes, we lived without running water and electricity, it was an inconvenience but it didn't devastate us. My oldest daughter (PlzBelizeMe) has been preparing herself for that type of lifestyle for years, she will adapt more easily, but I am not far behind. It's worth it to have peace of mind.

A few general tidbits on Belize:
1. The tourist season in most p[aces, with the exception of Ambergris Key, is only about 4-5 months out of the year really.
2. Many communities and great places to live in Belize may not have running municipal water per se; they collect rain water for most purposes and use purified water for drinking like bobbyvee said. It is a simple system, and works splendidly, just like 'home'.
3. Power can be viewed the same way, many places are still off the grid. Solar power is a great alternative and certainly easy to install. And no, doesn't cost a fortune whatsoever. IF one wants/needs A/C that 2x-3x the cost of the system, roughly speaking.
4. Bugs, the coastal areas of Belize do tend to have 'sandflies', meaning no-seems, and mosquitoes near standing water. Breezy coastal areas tends to keep them at bay. Mornings and evenings is usually their time to be most annoying. Use spray during such time and usually that cancels out their nuisance. Usually in time (some say 6 weeks) you will develop a natural immunity to reacting to them, they will still bite, but won't react to them as before..
5. Oftentimes the mantra on these boards is: come visit, rent for a while and then and only then think of investing or making a long-term commitment. Perhaps it should be: come, visit and see the country, it is small, In 2 weeks you can see its 5 principal areas (leaving Belize City out), and then go to where it struck your fancy in that trip or another trip and spend sometime renting. Availability of places to stay or rent do exponentially start to become available as of middle of March.

Random thoughts of the day this fine pleasant sunny Sunday morning.

Thank you FredAr!!!! We appreciate the feedback. I am falling in love with Hopkins from afar...any insight on that area? We definitely will be visiting there.

FredAr
  1/10/2016 17:45 EST

A lot of people get good vibes from Hopkins. Coincidentally, I have met about 3-4 people from this board and they all feel the same way. It is still funky, but with good enhancements coming like paved roads, especially as to amenities like a big supermarket and a real hardware, that I know off.

FredAr
  1/10/2016 17:50 EST

You know, I been entertaining my next 'project in Belize; so far Placencia Mini Storage (2013) > Bird Island Placencia (2014) > new routiseree/deli in Placencia (2016) about to open up in 2 weeks, called 'Hot Chics'.
I have almost 40 acres in Hopkins, just 5 minutes from town with a lot of creek frontage. Fabulous fertile and semi wooded land. I been thinking to subdivide it into 3-4 acre 'ranchettes', since I can make them very private with wooded belts between them. At a very affordable price (under 20k). Can help buyers with setting up water and power systems off the grid. I wonder if you folks think this is a good idea.
I am 67 so have just one more project left as to energy, but this one can be the next one. Then I am RE-retiring, I swear, I think. LoL

susanellen40

I would be interested in hearing more about your creekside lots. I have a lot near Corozal, but not sure if I will build on it.

FredAr
  1/10/2016 18:50 EST

Well, the idea started out as wanting a cool little 'ranch' of a few acres to grow thing on and even have farm animals, like when I was a kid. Who needs a big spread if one can have a private piece and good (and helpful) neighbors. Also to be able to have horses, which some people are into and is a good area for them. Power lines are very close by already also. It has a year-round excellent creek with pool after deep swimming pool.
Then two friends joined in and we are all buying the developing equipment (excavators, etc) , which we all know how to run and best way to create the ranchettes attractively and with thought; we all 3 did this in the US in years past. The two are moving to Belize within the next two years.
With Hopkin's future promising to be a good one, and having nice beaches and quite a few resorts offering social functions perhaps having a very affordable-entry small community of like-minded 'country' folks just 5 minute away may be attractive to some. Lot prices too-near the sea are becoming absurdly expensive even in Hopkins, and most offer little elbow room or any sense of privacy anyway.
Those are the fundamental conceptual thoughts.

nhj6889
  1/10/2016 19:30 EST

Lol...I hear you FredAr! Sounds like your wheels are always turning YOU CAN'T RETIRE! :-) That sounds like a great idea (the land)!! We are still working on so r things here in the U.S. but HOLD OUR SPOT, WE'RE COMING! It seems like things are falling into place for us.

Question...I have been a Caregiver for 15 yrs. I have cared for handicapped, mentally retarded, elderly and hospice patients. I realize I cannot work in Belize immediately, but have any of you known of a need for this care among expats? My passion is caring for ppl who are unable to care for themselves although, for the past 1 1/2 years I have been a companion for an "on the go" Dementia patient. I basically just keep her out of trouble AND THOROUGHLY ENJOY IT, but I enjoy caring for my patients on any and every level. Is there a need for ppl like me there?

Feel free to reach me via email: [email protected]

I have helped a few people now to relocate and have done this for myself:
1) dog import
2) banking
3) started a company
4) purchased real estate

can give you good contacts and help or at least point you in the right direction. My wife and I are from North Carolina. MUCH better weather here in the winter and about the same humidity and heat as NC in the Summer months (July - mid Sept.), so being form Alabama, it might be a small relief for you (but it definitely isn't as humid and hot as Alabama in the Summer. Glad to help and can talk on my US number (which is a magic jack number, bets and most portable way to reach the US while traveling and a few apps. If you want to have full contact with the US, an iPhone 4 is great to have as well (the iPhone 5 & 6 take a different SIM card than what Belize uses, so if something happens you cannot replace your phone number, so I have an iPhone 4 for my Belize number). Facebook Messenger, Facetime and Magic Jack App all let me call the US on my cell from anywhere with wi-fi to the US

Fred, If you have this area in Hopkins, please be in touch. We lived in Hopkins for a short time, have a friend there that is a retired construction guy from the US that is looking to do something to stay busy and we are currently in San Pedro (own a place here that I am currently living in, but rent out and initially bought as an investment property / get-away for ourselves), as we were supposed to be living in Hopkins for a one year + period but that situation did not work out and we are interested in getting back to Hopkins. I am a "semi-retired": 49 yr old so looking for something to keep me busy as well and have about a dozen US ppl coming to look at property investments in BZ over the next 4-6 months. I would be interested in talking and will be in Hopkins next week on a short business trip. Can we connect? email or reply and I can send my BZ and US phone numbers

I hope you build FredAr. I am coming to Hopkins in August to look around in preparation to moving there. I will also visit Placencia. Your idea sounds very interesting to me. I recently retired early so I will initially come alone. Once my husband retires he will come as well.

Hi. I am an Afro- American retired woman, who moved here in 2015. Cayo is nice and affordable, but Placencia has the beach. Placencia is more expensive but I am in walking distance of shopping, Doctor, dentist, pharmacy, water taxi, sushi, Italian food,etc.. Very short taxi ride to the "airport". I love it. Friendly people treat me as family.

Hi Gibsonmy, I have been trying to gather information to visit and eventually move to Belize. No one has really mentioned Cayo. Can you tell me more about the area? I would love to know as much as possible.

bradinbelize
  1/15/2016 09:20 EST

FOR DEB -
I am going to the Cayo next week and will be posting pics on my facebook and instagram - follow me if you like: brad reeder.

Really, when moving to Belize, I think the first thing everyone needs to ask is: "where do you want to live - WHAT KIND OF PLACE? beach (mainlnad or island), jungle, farm, a small inland town and do I need running water, electricity or am I good 'off the grid'?"

Everyone should check out the options and DRIVE the ENTIRE COUNTRY - it's not that far to get around everywhere. You can do it in two weeks and stay in each area for a few days. Plan to check out these towns and you will pass thorugh smaller areas, etc and get a "good feel" -

1) Cayes: Ambergris (San Pedro) & Caulker
2) San Ignacio (Cayo)
3) Corozal (North) and Orange Walk
4) Placencia
5) Hopkins
6) Punta Gorda

I have never met any expats that decided to live in BC and only one or two in Belmopan, but you might want to take a look there as well.

Plan a drive trip, it's easy and you can cover a lot of ground in a short time (and maybe find someone in each area to show you around). I will be posting pics from Cay next week.

bobbyveee
  1/15/2016 09:44 EST

Hi Brad. I would add the most important thing is 'your budget' what monies you have at your disposal can make a huge difference to how, where and lifestyle, the difference between wow this is great to Oh dear why did we make this choice. Also remember its ever so easy to buy , but increasingly hard to sell.

debhoo
  1/15/2016 21:03 EST

Bradinbelize,

Thanks so much for responding! I will definitely follow you. I appreciate it. I plan to visit for 7 days this trip but I had only made arrangements to go to Hopkins and Placencia. I may have to stay longer to include Cayo. Thanks for all the info!

QUESTION....I read that the most cost-effective way from Atlanta to Belize is through Cancun. I hope to spend a bit of time in Hopkins, what is the best means of transportation from Cancun? Or any other suggestions would be helpful.

Kenubelizeit
  1/17/2016 11:16 EST

There is flights from atlanta direct to belize with continental I believe or united in any given case there ADO bus lines operating out of playa and cancun direct to chetumal and then you take a cab to the border or email me at [email protected]

nhj6889
  1/18/2016 12:38 EST

Waljoa....what kind of bus is that?

I'm not overreacting but what the heck is happening in the Cayo District?? 2 unrelated issues I'm sure but GEEEEESH.

waljoa
  1/18/2016 19:30 EST

it was a large ADO bus the same that are cruising the highways around
Tulum here.
I do not have any more info,

Just was heading south while I was going north below Corozal

FredAr
  1/18/2016 21:18 EST

nh..To put things in further perspective. The two recent murders in the Cayo district were quite close to the Guatemalan border, and it can be a dangerous area for people traveling SOLO, especially along that river. The Benque area in particular doesn't have a sterling reputation to start with.
Something else I did notice and heard many times recently, the Cayo district ~in general~ is not enjoying the best of times economically, meaning extremely high unemployment. I wonder if the financial hard times may have helped to trigger these two tragedies by, of course, outright lunatics.

nhj6889
  1/18/2016 21:40 EST

OK waljoa...I appreciate the info.

FredAr, that is why I would rather not go too far inland. I have been defending my decision to move all day today! Ppl throwing statistics at me about crime in Belize is quite annoying. I told them to check the stats in the U.S., some areas are not safe DAY OR NIGHT. I'm not bashing this country, just being honest.

FredAr
  1/19/2016 08:03 EST

Well, statistics can be used by people in a million ways, oftentimes for a myriad of ~personal~ reasons, one of them oftentimes is to reinforce their personal choices in their lives.

Even given the same data, humans will connect the dots differently, and give a different degree of relevancy to each one of them. What makes humans interesting.

Personally I love to learn, so my manner in life has always been to ask a million questions, to pick everyone's brain till their heads shrivel up like one big large raisin. I approach people that have something bright to say as my next 'victim'. LoL

nhj6889
  1/19/2016 09:24 EST

My sentiments exactly FredAr! Well except the next "victim" part. Lol Once upon a time, I did the same thing. My attraction was ppl who hid behind a tough exterior. It was my mission to find out why and show them that being nice wasn't so bad. I'm tired now....I just want to settle amongst some nice ppl and just be happy. :-)

Hey!
i will be moving my family to Belize in 2 weeks! there are a lot of us (black americans) there. the town i will be in is called San Ignacio but there are plenty of us all around the country. there is also a facebook group which i can invite you to join if you message me your faceboon info!
belizean folsk are nto like americans in regards to dogs... so expect your dogs to be treated like animals and not like part of your family. many homeowners dont allow dogs in the houses so that may prove a challenge if your dogs are used to in home living. if you join the fb group i am sure someone can advise you on a great location for you. San ignacio (where i plan to settle) is quite inland.

I have been traveling to Belize for many years now. I always have a reservation for the first night if I arrive late in the day. After that.....NEVER. Two reasons, I don't always know which direction I am going (rented car) and NEVER not found a room. Someone will rent to you and be happy to do it. Once I had to juggle nights in Hopkins. Had to move out for one night but back in the next. For that night I rented across the street. Belize is slowing down and more rentals available.....As far as "African Americans moving to Belize" seems like a strange topic for Caribbean country that is mostly of color. I would more expect to see topics like "Caucasian American moving to Belize" My wife skinned her elbow on one of our trips and asked for a bank aid it was black.

Hi, I am an African American from Georgia. I live in Placencia and LOVE it. Can not garden because I live near the sea and there's to much salt in the air. Probably could with a green house. You need to visit. There are many different areas, depends on what you like.

Gibsonmy

Have you ever thought of doing the poly tunnels instead of a green house, Don't know if still available but the Business information center used to have aall the info about them and their uses. Many years ago the government did major training of local farmers with them had a team going all over the country. Prior to that training there were much fewer Fresh vegetable choices available in the market place than there are today. Until bigger crops could be depended on, things like capsicums and tomatoes were either much more expensive and short supply, or total gluts and selling possibly at a loss to the producers, also very short seasons. The poly tunnels allow the season to be extended from about 1 month to 4 months, Helps to keep down the numbers of food imports.
