My girlfriend & I are looking at options - Costra Rica or Belize. Did you look at Costra Rica? Why did you choose Belize? Obviously, language is in favor of Belize. Cost of living? Easier (or harder) residency? Cost of living? Weather?
Background - I'm 71 & retired. Would like to live on $2,500/month or less. Doable?
Climate: Not concerned about rain. I live in Oregon. Would like a moderate (80's high/60's low) temperature.

Hi. Choices as regards liking a country are very personal. I think you need to visit both and make your own decision . Good luck

I have lived in both for approximately 5 years in and since I do speak Spanish fluently I can't honestly appreciate (but imagine) the language-barrier reality. Btw, many people in Costa Rica do speak English, and Spanish is very prevalent in Belize. To me, Costa Rica is way more 'advanced' than Belize, and has a much larger foreign influence than Belize which is also more rustic and new; though in many ways it is more interesting and its opportunities are greater. Perhaps the choice really lies in your level of adventure and satisfaction on being 'actualized', After 5 years in Belize which I came to at 62 years old, I feel more satisfied with life now, like I accomplished a few more things in life that were important, that MAY have been harder to achieve in Costa Rica (and certainly in the US). Perhaps in a few more years I may be finally more receptive for something more settled, but then who knows where Belize will be by then since it is changing rapidly. Income wise $2500 is more than sufficient in Belize, depending on your lifestyle of course. Good questions by the way.

^^^ Like bobbyvee said, it is a very personal choice. Couldn't agree more.

we are semi retired Canadian couple who spent much time in Belize and Costa Rica, Belize is definitely more affordable, we own property in Better in Belize eco community, offers security, private lake, excellent natural environment, lots of ideas, check out their website and let us know if you have further questions, people building their own homes with a wide range of $$ cost

Belize: Weather between 70 - 85, depending on where in Belize, you can live on $2,500 per month easily.
I am 49, about to turn 50 (semi-retired and live on less than that in San Pedro (and I own a condo here). When we lived in Hopkins, we lived much cheaper (And I need internet, go out to eat, have a car, etc.). I have a friend that is 73 and has been here for about 6 months and loving it. He's not on the internet much at all, but I could connect you if you like and he'd be happy to talk to you. I have never been to Costa Rica so cannot comment on that.

If you own your property, then $2500 /month is a lot, if you have to rent then it depends very much on how much that costs, parts of the coast and the Cayes are expensive if you want something half decent. but it can be done on that money, but your leisure spending monies will be greatly reduced, its all down to life style.

Good information all. Many thanks for the insights. Lots to consider. Obviously a couple of visits are necessary (which I already knew).

Wow.. the 2500 scared me. I'don't been advised that I could live comfortably on 1500 SS by renting a 1bd apt. I am moving in Dec. 2016, thinking Corazol area would suit me best. I will be 70 yr old adventure loving single woman making move alone. Can I be successful managing on that?
