Are there any form Federal Employee Expats in Belize that can give me information about which Medical Insurance to secure for life in Belize. I know that the BE plan for citizens can be obtained for about $50 per month, but what about insurance for major issues like heart and cancer?

You get on a plane and go home . NO hospitals can treat you in Belize, Save your insurance monies, have enough for an air fare. If your not a reasonably healthy person, don't come. Pretty str8 forward

Maybe there are some decent hospitals in Chetumal, Mexico. If you live in Corozol, you will only be about 15-20 miles away. Don't expect any razmo ambulance service or anything. I would not be relying on the hospitals in Belize either. I had a broken arm treated once, and made the mental note, I pray nothing serious happens to me down here. There is a decent Miami trained internist in Corozol, Dr. Omar Vasquez. It is not like what we are accustomed to in the States.

You can have the best, most expensive, insurance there is, but at 3am when you have a heart attack there is nothing anyone can do, especially on the cayes. If you have a disease that requires medication, those meds are probably sold here at a very reasonable price. If you actually need doctor/hospital care, then choices and chances are slim. There are some great doctors here, but they are working with very limited resources.

Bobby, You must not be familiar with the onerous requirements of Obamacare. US Citizens must have some form of health insurance or be penalized. Also, as a former fed, once you have health insurance, you sure as heck don't want to let it go. Once out of the system, it's gone forever even if you move back to the States. It's a gottcha coming and going. That's why I asked the ????? The UK must not have the same problems. The stupid person in our presidents office really screwed the average working person along with retired pukes like me.

So the gist of what U R saying is we maintain a policy for when we fly back for extreme medical emergencies and pay out of pocket over in Chet. Just wanting to get the correct skinny.

Hi....I would say that would be accurate assessment. Pay out of pocket in Chet, and do what you gotta do with the other. My son was hospitalized in Japan for 3 weeks. They wanted him to swipe his Visa card when he left the hospital. I think it was about 240,000 US....His university sent him over there uninsured and sent him to a crummy DR. , he came with in 24 hrs of death. I refused to pay and my alma mater had to pick up that tab. Swiping that card on the exit could make you catch your breath.... Just sayin... I don;t know how much a Mexican hospital stay would be. I know how I can find out if you like....Melissa

Thanks, mgammo, but I'll just have to beat my keyboard on the Inet until I have a satisfactory answer. May even have to call the Office of Personnel Mgmt and get cozy with someone to get my answers. I know there are some plans which will reimburse doctors and medical facilities directly, but I just don't know the ouch factors of companies. Lot to do and lots to learn.

If you move to Belize you should be in excellent physical, emotional and relational health. You should be free of alcohol or substance abuse issues although that may change after a few months.
Emergency and trauma care is dismal. The Belize health care system will do nothing to help only hasten your transition into the afterlife. Ambulances are poorly equipped assuming you can find one and paramedics are poorly trained. Live as close to Chetumal as possible and make use of Clinico Carranza. Very competent. (Chetumal also has Walmart and Home Depot). Dr Vasquez, whom I have worked with, is top notch but limited by the crap medical infrastructure.

Hi Pappy. I happen to be a Brit , my wife American, we get the best of both systems, and I still use the Health system for free even tho I no longer in UK and my prescriptions are free and family post them to me. But we are both pretty healthy,

Yup, I am pretty healthy, but my wife has issues which we are trying to address b4 moving. Our plans are to live in Corozal/Consejo/mayan areas so that Chet is close. If I've learned anything from you folks, it's Chet has gr8 clinics and docs.

you will not get high end work like bypass done in belize. the link provides info on a competent transport. they typically take you to the closest US specialty. I think it costs something like 300.00 a year.

We had similar, but provided thro our divers association, similar price. It made a lot of sense to us, as flights were direct into Houston which was close to were we lived and had world class med. facilities.
