Who here has sold a shipping container after using it to move to Belize? Is it difficult, or was there plenty of demand?

Ones in good shape should sell. I may be interested depending on the time it will be available.

bobbyveee, I understand that a rented container needs to be cleared and unloaded at the port, but an owned container can be delivered to my residence still sealed, cleared at my place, then unloaded at my convenience. The latter sounds way less stressful.
belizelenny, I wouldn't be arriving and unloading for several months, but thanks.
I wonder if the supply of containers is absorbed by commercial shippers, or people emigrating with all their stuff.

Just curious and potential planning, how much is a container, where do you get one and how much to ship? You make a good point that you can wait to unload!

There are several web sites, this is one example, not necessarily the best: http://shippingcontainersales.net/shipping_containers.html They want you to call for a price, which I haven't done. I've heard ballpark estimates of $3000 to $5000 to purchase. More for a good paint job, which I don't care about. More for nicer ones that are rodent proof, which I do care about.
About shipping, I don't know but have a crude guess. I've had an estimate of about $1700 to ship my car, port to port, in a 20 foot container. I can imagine paying not quite double that for a 40 foot container full of household goods. And of course I'll be paying someone to haul it to Florida from Iowa.
The point of my original question is to get some idea whether there is demand for containers on the return trip. It would be nice not to take a loss on it when I'm done.

Thanks for the great info. Good luck on your move and selling once you are done with your container. I will keep checking on your progress.

I plan on buying a 20 foot container to ship all of my household items and possibly a small truck, then convert the shipping container to living space

Hi. A 160 sq. ft oven with walls running in condensation. You'll need to spend a lot to stop that happening. Even storing stuff in containers leads to the contents being ruined by mildew. Good luck

What would you do to deter rust? Things tend to rust very quickly in the elements in Belize....

Put shipping containers in the search window here on this site and you will find some reading. Everything in the tropics that can rust does rust and metal conducts heat very well. Two factors that make containers a bad idea in my book.

You have a great idea. I think when I make the move I'll try to buy a container. I love the idea of having a secure container to unload as I get to it. And then to convert the container into a shop, and garage for the scooters.
