….we stayed at Serenity Sands bed and breakfast just out side of Corozal Town. Penny the owner built the place. It is off grid with solar panels and a wind turbine. I'm sure she could also answer lots of questions for you. Todd

I'm studying doing a container home, primarily for the resilience and security but I'll go as green as my wife allows. Have you any experience with or opinions on container homes?

Lots of work indeed. I'm kind of into that. Instead of hiring a guy to do $20,000 worth of welding, I'm more likely to buy $2,000 worth of welding equipment... and a book. Containers seem like they would make a good shelter in a hurricane, a gang conflict, a landslide, and a fair submarine in a tsunami!
I understand that without standard walls to run wire behind, all wiring would have to be in conduits. Pretty expensive, but correct me if I'm wrong, don't concrete houses also require conduit for wiring?

I understand. I've read that spray foam insulation on the exterior is a fair solution for about $700 per 40 footer (in civilization - maybe more of a challenge in the rain forest).
Maybe I read that in here. I've been searching and reading in this forum for a while. Very helpful. Thanks folks.
I'm also considering putting a low, steel-framed metal hip roof over my containers (if this idea turns out to be the solution). I think that putting shade over the structure would reduce the temperature difference between the outside of the top of the container and the inside of the container, thus reducing the tendency for condensation to form on the ceilings. Plus I need to figure out a good way to get rid of the additional moisture caused by people breathing inside the house.
I intend to come for a visit this summer. I want to look at properties during the rainy season in order to get a good feel for the challenges ahead.

Our forst build was totaly off grid, water catchment tanks, and solar power and deptic waste. We are in Cayo district Belmopan. We used Pro solar in Belmopan and they were fantastic and continue to be so. Not inexpensive to install but no Electricity bills for 2 years+ We were one of the few places that kept power throughout the direct hit hurricane last summer.

You need to talk to Tobias Sengfelder in Belize. He lives out past Spanish Lookout in a place called the Yalbach. Look for a bnb on the net. Build out of used tires as the frame. Completely off grid. Great guy too. His wife is a gem as well. Germans. Been there a long time. Good luck.
