My partner and I are considering a move Ambergris Caye in 2018. Our two main questions concern whether we will be safe and welcome there. We've researched the laws, but are seeking info on general living experience. thank you.

…we were all over Belize and finally decided to buy a house. Deal closes in April. We are buying it for business purposes; but it has a suite in it we will vacation in. I have two young children and would not have considered it at all if we thought it was unsafe.
Like everywhere else in the world there are higher risk neighbourhoods.

Belize decriminalized homosexual acts between consenting adults this past year, as a result of a Belize Supreme Court ruling which held portions of its sodomy laws to be in violation of the national Constitution. Belize still remains a rather traditional society; open or public displays of affection between two men or between two women may draw unwanted attention in many towns and villages. That said, you're asking about a tiny area of Belize with a high proportion of foreign residents and visitors. Attitudes will be somewhat more liberal. However you should not expect that everyone you need will be instantly welcoming of your relationship.

Fowler,
We live in AC and you will be fine, no worries at all. You should not openly display affection (which may invite minor troubles from SOME of the local population), but the general attitude of the people here (meaning Belizeans, is "who cares, have a nice day". There is a very large Pride Festival (and that was going on when homosexuality was illegal), so that should give you an idea. It has now been found unconstitutional as someone mentioned and is legal. There are not all of the social hang-ups here that we have in the US - people are people and as long as you are nice and friendly, most everyone is the same back to you (and people in BZ are MUCH friendlier than anywhere you will find in the US). You will have more people looking oddly at you if you don't stop and chat and aren't friendly than you ever will just for being gay.

Come down, check it out and enjoy - if you can handle a slow pace and laid back lifestyle, can be friendly and socialize with locals, your questions here is irrelevant. Let us know when you're coming and I will give you some suggestions of places to go/see and hang with some locals and expats.
