My wife and I spend a week in Belize a few months back. Three days up in Corozal and four in Placencia. We rented a car and drove all over the place, we didn’t do a lot of tourist type things. We were really exploring the areas to see if and where we would be comfortable to retire. We found places we liked, some we didn’t. The place that absolutely ended at the top of our list was Hopkins village.
I am very interested in hearing from people who live in or around Hopkins or have in the past. I am interested in warts and all. Anyone who would have anything to share about this area would be welcome.

Over the years we have spent a lot of time in Hopkins. Lots of building going on currently and that looks good. My wife has to 'tune in' to an area to like it. For her it is not what it looks like or even the people possibly but the feel. The high dollar builds on each end of the village with the locals in the middle don't suit her AT ALL! Currently the banking issues have us scared off from Belize. Gov. corruption is another reason we are heading to Mexico. We found similar areas North of Merida on the water. It has the advantage of a town of 700K 30 mins away.

How about the language barrier in Mexico? I assume a lot of people come to Belize because English is spoken there

Good thing you decided on Mexico which is definitely free of corruption.
I have a house in the "high dollar" area of Hopkins. Small cozy house, right on the sea.
Nice thing about Hopkins is you can luxury seafront or small shack in the middle of the village (and some options in between).
Hopkins is growing. It's a great village with a bright future. Now I have a home in a beautiful place that my family and I can enjoy for years!

I keep hearing good things about Hopkins. We are in Corozal Town. Next time we are back in Belize I think we'll have an outing to Hopkins for a few days. Hopefully there is a bed and breakfast type place in town.

Boweigo......I don't find more of a language barrier in Mexico than Belize......Maybe a little. Any place the expats are in Mexico English is understood. I have never had a problem understanding daily language in Mexico, and I don't speak Spanish. Buying a beer, groceries or a ???? can pretty much get done with out language. They do understand English better than I am at Spanish. In Belize I have more problem understanding their accent not their English, for those that are speaking English in Belize.

Todd, Check Hopkins Inn. I believe they offer breakfast with their rooms. All seasons is nice but I don't think they offer breakfast. I've stayed at coconut row. They have numerous options.
Hope this helps.

We spent a few days in Corizal. I like the location up there. Like Orange walk too. Hopkins has some of the best beaches in Belize and is very small. There was just a really nice feel to it, and the people.
Interested to hear your take on Hopkins.
