Hi. I think before you do anything if you are really wanting to move lock, stock and barrel to Belize you need to come visit, schooling is poor, medical basic, kids stuff like pampers are expensive, If your going to need imported stuff Belize is expensive. Home schooling could be the way to teach especially if your kids will want to return to the US at a later date. You will also need over $2000/ month income . you need to think this thro very carefully

Most people who come to Belize with kids from North America have serious adjustment issues. There are exceptions, but I've seen more failures than successes. It is one thing for us old folks to leave all we know and relax in Belize as we have made our mark, but to make that choice for young people that have their whole life ahead is in IMO a little nutty and irresponsible. Give them the same opportunities you had. I met an American minister who had a teenager. He was home schooled" via internet courses. He did fine last I knew. Getting an education in Belize is kind of like travelling around the world in a sailboat with kids but something you do only for a year. Homeschooling is the way to go if socialization is accomplished because the local education system is a total piece of crap. As for health care there are fine pediatricians around for minor issues but the support structure in terms of modern equipment, techniques, and facilities is absent.

Hi. Good glad you know the layout of the land. If you have the money, Ambergris caye is a great place to live and raise a family. Placencia another pleasant area. Good luck

If you know Belize then do you have an idea of the sort of area you wish to reside? It will be more expensive in Beach areas, like the Cayes, Placencia, and Hopkins. I believe Corozal is less expensive but while it is sea adjacent is not a true Beach area. If you were to need or were just hoping to take up employment employment that could present a lot of problems as most positions are only readily available to Belize citizens, Your children are young enough to be less fazed by entering the schooling system than those already in a national system elsewhere. From the medical stance yes there are no great technologically advanced hospitals, but there are some good GP's in most areas and if you have no family History of chronic illnesses the simple accident and pediatric cover is not as terrible as is often made out. I see the replies you have got are by a couple of members, who while having had experience in living in Belize have both left the country. They both can give some good insights to a lot of areas of life in Belize but do have a tendency to try to discourage any New Comers. If you can narrow down what your expectations are in terms of where you want to be in Belize, I am sure there are plenty of folks on this forum happy to advise. Outside of larger parts of Belize City, where there are major problems with gangs, I think Belize is a friendly safe (as much as you can make that claim for anywhere) and welcoming country. Good luck with you plans. Many people liken it in many ways to Jamaica, closer to comparisons with other Northern American countries.

I think since you are moving from another Caribbean country, the culture shock aspect should not be so overwhelming. I hope you can meet some decent people to give you a support system to help you out with your children. When I am in Belize, my support system is comprised of mostly Belizeans. I noticed books are kind of scarce in Corozal, I am a retired teacher and I always utilized books when I taught. I think maybe if your kids matriculated into say a parochial school, the education they would possibly get would need to be supplemented with your own gap filling curricula at home.. I even supplemented my own sons' education here, but that was just me..They do speak English there and they do teach the kids how to read. They also teach Spanish as a second language....In some ways, I think they are better off not being so"wired."..The computer has helped raise a generation of kids who can't think for themselves.. It has its downsides. If you want them to be quasi technologically savy, if you feel it is important, you better take in a lap top and handle that by yourself....

To generalize that the whole education system is "crap" is unfair imo. I raised three sons in a village in the O. Walk district and worked with education system of Belize for over six years (founded the Belize High School of Agriculture). When we went back to the US to reconnect with family and culture my sons had no problem transitioning into the schools. The high schools are very competitive and only the best get into the better schools and I would rate them up there with any schools anywhere. I do agree there is definitely more opportunities for young people in the US.

Allan 1 , why don't you tell us about the merits of the school system in your favorite city in Mexico which blows away Belize.

4 children under 3? Are a set of your children twins? Just interested and intrigued. I am a single veteran myself looking to move to Belize.

TROPICAL:
Probably the only place that is safe for your kids, has great internet AND a great school (the Island academy) is in San Pedro. You should check out the "Island Academy". There is also a kindergarten/pre-school on the island.
I believe you might also do well in San Ignacio but it's nit quite up to the Island Academy and if your kids education is the most important thing, that is the best choice in Belize.
