Just wondering if it is possible to buy a cheap phone and buy international minutes to put on it, I did this in Jamica and it was fairly cheap. Thank you all for answering all my questions as I have no idea about Belize

You can bring an unlocked phone (a lot cheaper than buying in Belize) and put in a Digicell chipcard. Prices you can find here: https://www.digicell.bz/
If you plan on buying a phone in Belize you can also get a phone from Smart company. https://smart-bz.com
Both companies offer double up days where you get double the credit you paid in irregular intervals.

Well Bobby... I called the US and texted back to the US plenty on my cheap flip phone. I know I didn't dream it. Maybe things have changed over the past year, but that was my experience...

Texting is different to talking, but calling from Belize was expensive on mobile phones certainly upto 2015 , In the USA going the other way i get 100 mins for $5 which is reasonable and thats to europe, but skype always worked well and was very cheap

It's not thatexpensive for minutes. I fyou have a US phone plan, call them and add the country of Belize (AT&T and Sprint both have these options - it will cost you around 35 cents/ minute. but here's cheaper options:
1) What'sApp - FREE
2) Magic Jack - $35 annually and you can call unlimited from Belize to US or Canada for free (need internet connection) - also has an APP for your iPhone so it can forward to that thus traveling with you
3) Facebook Messenger (calling) - FREE
I use a combo of the above and have my US cell number forward to the magic jack number so no one even knows the difference - it just rings to my house in Belize (for $35 USD per year) and I can call clients and family on it in US and Canada as well.
