My wife and I are planning on 7 - 10 days in Belize in August. We are exploring for retirement possibilities. Do you have specific recommendations for an itinerary or housing. Stay in one place and drive to other areas or move around every 2 or three days? Who best to chat with prior to arrival? Open to all suggestions! Thank you.

Stay in different places to really get a feel for each are as many spots are a few hours drive from each other, Corozal, Cayo and Placencia.

Here's what you need to do IF you really want to be fully informed and really see the majority of the places you might want to live. Would you say "I'm moving to America" and then just pick iIowa randomly or NYC (they are very different lifestyles, as are various places in Belize).

10 day:
Day 1: Fly into BC - drive one hour out to around Belmopan and get a place there for 3 nights.
Day 2: Drive to San Ignacio and surrounding area
Day 3: Drive up to Orange Walk and Back
Day 4: Drive to Hopkins / Sittee River and get a hotel for 3 nights
Day 5: explore Hopkins / Sittee River
Day 6: Explore Placencia
Day 7: Drive back to BC, get water taxi to Cayes (Ambergris Caye - San Pedro) and a hotel for 3 nights
Day 8: explore San Pedro
Day 9: day-trip from San Pedro to Caulker (30 minute water taxi each way)
Day 10: Back to BC OR fly from San Pedro to Corozal (spend the night there and fly back to SP the following day), then water taxi to BC on Day 11

That shows you the vast majority of the country and you will get an idea of what you DON'T WANT. Then plan trip # 2 to come back and spend at least 3 days in EACH of your top 3 picks.

Trip 3 - come spend 2 - 4 weeks in your top choice

This is the only smart way to not waste your money and figure out WHERE you can live and WHAT lifestyle choices you can adjust to. It's a journey, not a race when moving to another country - take your time, GO SLOW (as they say on Caulker) and SAVE YOURSELF A ton of money (I have seen DOZENS or marriages break up, dozens of life savings lost because people made hasty choices and didn't give themselves time).

I think that trip is kind of too much, I had a friend coming down fom Canada recently and after I picked him up at Belize City We drove Placencia and stayed there 3 nights. Than we drove to with a short stay in Hopkins for some hours. In Corozal we were 1 night and took the ferry to Ambergris where we stayed another 3 nights. Back to Corozal, another night and than back home the next day.
That trip was exhausting despite we had our own vehicle.

If you REALLY want to experience Belize and really SEE the country and it's various places and peoples, do the 10 day trip I listed above. I've done it DOZENS of times - it keeps you moving but if you are SERIOUS about moving to Belize, you need to do it and see all of those places. We are a country that is about the size of Massachusetts, so it's do-able and not crazy. This is NOT a vacation - this is an EXPLORATION itinerary for people that are serious about moving and living in Belize.

Once you do the trip I outlined above, then you narrow it down and stay longer at your top 3 choices on your second trip (again, that should be 2 weeks and stay at each town for 4 - 5 days). My sugestion then is to come for a month to your top choice, then a month at your second choice and third, fourth (down the line until you find a place that you are happy with) - THEN, RENT for 6 months - by then you will know whether Belize is right for you (you will have been on the ground and met people and you will save a significant amount of money if you decide to buy or build as you won;t just be a gringo to take advantage of and get their money quickly (The time spent will more than pay for itself) and you will find the right "fit for you"
