Hi all I am starting to think about retiring in Belize. My situation it has to be cheap. so wanted to see if there was some input about what options are for renting. Have thought about Placencia, Corozal and San Pedro. Coming from Vancouver Canada and I have lived in Playa del Carmen before but a long time ago. So just wanted to get an idea of current rental costs small and basic.
Thanks

In your list the only one that might qualify as cheap is corozal , San Pedro and placencia are the two most expensive places in Belize. I recommend you look more inland, does not have to be that far but you will see a huge price reduction.

We lived on Ambergris caye for 16 yrs . we now spend most of out time in central western florida, our overheads here are a lot less than Belize, especially for gas, electricity, internet, wine spirits many foods inc. beef. We have great local hospitals , nothing ib belize. Belize is a beautiful country but dont go there thinking its cheap, you can exist cheaply but not live comfortably cheaply. good luck

Hey fawltyhooligan, we should talk. I am also looking at Belize as a retirement destination. I have 2 real estate agents I'm talking to and I found this page that is a wealth of information. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Belize.
My name is Mike. You can reach me at - 8sandaces@gmail.com. We really should talk.
Mike.

While numbeo seems to be not too far off, take into account that I have not heard of a theater in Belize and average wages are really much lower than represented. Just a couple of observations . Each area does have their own pricing.

The problem is costs vary across Belize depending on where you are and time of yr. Only true way to find out is go visit and find out the things that matter to you.

There are a number of sites all of which you must sort the relevant information from, each person has their own views on what is relevant.

Corozal will be much less expensive than the Cayes or Placencia. Rents in villages are 100 US - 250US, In Corozal town, if you do your research 500 BZ to 500US.

This is fantastic information folks....... Thank You sooooo much. I'm looking for a quite life, access to beer (I'm Canadian, love my beer). I read a lot, I'm a wanna be writer so access to the internet is essential. I'm not a materialist person. A small place is all I'm looking for and within maybe an hour bike ride to a beach.

Belizelenny is correct. If you insist on relocation to Belize, as opposed to a more rational choice like Mexico, Nicaragua or even Bolivia, then Corozal is the best one. Each area of Belize has its proponents but the proximity to the amenities and medical care of Chetumal make Corozal a no brainer. Plus by itself its a quiet, safe, and pleasant location with some very nice and helpful folks.

I forgot to mention that if u want reliable high speed internet, Belize isnt going to normally do it, but you could get a smart MIFI unit and that will be sufficient though not cheap. In Corozal there is Stellar links which pulls a signal from Mexico. But its very expensive. As for beer, there is limited choice as Belikin has a monopoly and its main use is as a colonic cleanser,However many Belizeans in Corozal smuggle in a variety of Mexican brews, again a major plus for relocating there

Officially now your info is out of date as there are at least 5 different beers on sale now. Internet is changing too but not as fast. You really need to update your database In order to maintain your status as being down on anything in Belize accuracy counts. Lol

Current Belize beer situation.. * Belikin Beer – Alcohol 4.8 % * Belikin Stout – Alcohol 6.5 % * Belikin Premium – Alcohol 4.8 % * Lighthouse Lager by Belikin – Alcohol 4.2 % * Guinness Stout – Alcohol 7.5% * Seasonal Belikin Beers. Chocolate Stout, Verano Beer, Sorrel Stout. * Carib Beer – Alcohol 5.2% ( basura beer) * Heineken Beer – Alcohol 5% ( i have been to Holland and this dont much taste like Heineken) Belize is no place for a beer connoisseur In Mexico u can get a dozen + and local varieties plus imported including Belgian

"I'm a wanna be writer so access to the internet is essential."
Good luck with that. Internet, like much of infrastructure in Belize, is very sketchy-and expensive. Regardless, you better come and live in some of the places long before you "settle." Paradise is not always what it seems in the books.
