Hi,
Thanks in advance for reading this topic. Your comments will be highly appreciated.
My wife, my 3 years old twins and I are considering to move to Belize for 3-9 months. We are semi-nomads who stay for some months/years in a place and depart for a new adventure.
One of the reasons to explore Belize, is that our kids are in a good age to learn english, so a safe place with schools at a walking distance is more important for us than pubs and beaches. We are not elitist, local and rural schools are OK.
Which place would you recommend us to settle? and how much does it cost an elementary school/kindergarten in Belize?
I work online and we have a budget $2500 USD monthly. Beyond that we can take from our savings. is $3000 USD a reasonable amount for 2 adults + 2 kids? i see rents for furnished 1bedroom apartments (airbnb) in Belize are around 1200USD, there are a few cheaper but in rural areas where i doubt there are schools and WiFi.
We plan to explore the whole country on weekends :)
Many thanks

This question pops up here so often. Again: In general you can do it with 3k a month for 4 people but on a very low lifestyle. I would not recommend to do it.

Hi Mikxx,
Thanks for your answer. Then we will try with $3500 USD :) anyway, taking 1K per month from savings is cheaper than a good english school for the twins and surely more fun.
Do you recommend us any area of Belize to move? how much does the elementary school cost in Belize?
Thanks a lot

Hi The best of everything , especially schools and great out door living is on Ambergris caye IMHO You can get long term rentals there around $1500/month. you need bicycles or rent a golf cart. great place to be for 6 to 12 months.

the poster said he was not worried about Bars and besach's so why recomend the most expensive area of Belize that is all bars and beaches. and Belize has more schools that are ofat least equal quality to the academy in San Pedro.Good schools abound in Cayo SI, Belmopan, Placencia, and hard to believe there are some good schools at all levels in Belize city. I do not know any people with children in the other districts so can make no comment personally if the poster really wants to offer his kids a cultural experience why go to the area that is the most expat populated in Belize. the Mainland can provide far more cultural diversity than AG ever can. Love San Ped for vacation spot but if beach life was my dream I would go somewhere along the Placencia peninsula. just my two penorth.

Hi Terrific,
Thanks a lot, your advice is greatly appreciated
Do you have any idea about the monthly fees of elementary schools in Belize? I have googled a lot without luck!
Would you recommend San Ignacio or Placencia to live from Monday to Friday?. We could visit the cays and the mayan ruins on weekends.
The idea is to get a place where my kids can walk to the school, learn english, mix with local kids and enjoy the experience of Belize while i am busy working.
Best wishes

Hands down, with your family and small children, I vote Placencia or very close to this village. Not a party place like Ambergris, lower keyed, and per friends with children, pretty good schools, and private schools too. my experience visiting different areas of Belize found some seriously great places to live, but overall. Lifestyle, safety, availability of stuff I need, cost of living, etc. made my choice Placencia area. Ambergris is nice, but you are on an island, and everything is expensive because of it. Great for " spring breakers", or those who come to belize for it's great diving, but there's great diving off Placencia too. Good luck.

Experience here. The money you have is plenty! And you WILL NOT have to go into savings unless you start renting jet skis in San Pedro every week end. To those who say nay, they have no clue or among the impatient who impulse bought whatever they have. San Ignacio and its environs is where I raised my three boys. They atttended a public school and we lived LARGE on about US1500 p/m. Rent was US400. You DO NOT find these homes in a newspaper or through a realtor. You find them by sitting in a cafe and having a beer with the locals. Talk to them. They want to help and they want a reason for you to think well of them. San Pedro is where you will find 1200 dollar rents (Though I started there with a place on the water for US800 and found one three months later, on the water, for US600.00,) and Placencia is also on the upper end. But homes across the beach in Hopkins rent for US5-6 hundred and a home several blocks of can be had for the belizean equivalent. (5-6 hundred BZE.) Get an inexpensive hotel whereever you want to be and pay a weeks rent in advance. That is what I did and my first home was US700. (3 bed 1 and a hafl bath fifteen minute walk from town with a stunning view of the twin towns and a peak at the river. It was from there we moved across the street to a smaller, but nicer home for US400. WE had to wait for it to become unoccupied. Later we bought a place on the river just out of town, five beds, three full baths for US75k. YOU MUST BE PATIENT. YOU MUST NOT IMPULSE BUY OR RENT. You want more info and some contacts private message me.

I forgot to mention that you may have some luck, all of you, on the buy/sell belize group on Facebook. Find other groups there as well if you want to see the local trends/chat sites. Locals post places for sale and rent there with regularity. That and a host of everything else. This will give all of you a taste of what to expect to pay for many things during your stay. When not shopping on line (in BZE), shopping is most economical when you do it the European way. One store for meat, the market for fresh produce. etc., ........

Hi Belizeboy,
Thanks for your advice. It seems the decision will be between Placencia and San Ignacio.
Googling schools in Placencia I only found two: Peninsula academy (very expensive!) and St John's preeschool (no idea about fees).
Do you know other schools and how much they cost?
The furnished apartments in Placencia listed on airbnb cost the same that in San Pedro (1200USD aprox) but i presume is possible to get something cheaper talking with the locals.
Many thanks!

Hi Phantone,
You are convincing me to go to San Ignacio!
I knew by comments that it is the area of Belize with the lowest cost of living, but i had to read twice the "we lived LARGE on about US1500 p/m".
How much did you pay for the public school?
I guess the rents for furnished apartments are a bit higher than $400 and $700, but thats OK. while the town is safe and the schools are at a walking distance we will be fine.
Many thanks for your help and advice!

The place in San Ignacio for 700.00 was fully, and I mean fully, furnished. The one for four, not so much. My kids attend public schools for the cost of books and uniforms. About US150-300 per year. (I have boys, they do a lot of damage.)

I want to put something in perspective for you. Grade school teachers in, Belize, make about US500 per month. Offer one the same amount of money for three hours a day to teach your kids privately and there you go. Its an option. We did it for a while but evetually put our kids back into the system for the social end of it. We kept the teacher on as a tutor on mutual agreement. Point is that there are options besides an expensive private school. Good luck.
