Would Ambergris Caye be an affordable place to live on a limited income if you chose to live outside the city of San Pedro?
Housing will be less of an issue but concerned about living expenses other than housing. Any information would be appreciated.
Also is there any appreciable bennefit to living in either Ambergris Caye or Placencia?

Two very different places. One is on an island and major tourist destination where cost of living is higher than mainland. The other is more of a village atmosphere, slower pace, best beaches in Belize, and becoming a major expat choice. That being said, as everyone will tell you on this site ( that actually live in Belize like self), come vacation for a few weeks in both locations, then come back to your choice and rent for a year. Then make your own decision on where to live. Nobody can tell you where the best location is for you to live, although many will try. Best advice, come down multiple times and find out yourself. Meet and talk to Expats that actually have done it and live here. And that's my best advise. Good luck.

That advise is spot on. Not doing this is setting yourself up for failure. Do it sets you up for a much better experience.

I have heard numbers from 40% to 60% of expats return north. Belize is very poor so dont expect the services you have back home especially medical. The place runs on island time, can you abide that? Rent until you decide if the place is for you. I decided against it account of heart issues. Anything beach will be pricier, inland will be cheaper.

ROWEDOG - You just got theBEST ADVICE on BZ from two other people. I have now helped several people move here, some renting, some have purchased homes/condos. DO NOT BUY immediately, come for TWO WEEKS if possible, travel to all locations you think you might like to live and then COME BACK to your first choice and rent for a month (or 3 if you can), then maybe rent for 3 months at your second choice, then rent for a YEAR at wherever you decide. There is no rush. Come and enjoy live and find out IF you CAN live in Belize (many can't - it is a different world and not for everyone). With that said don't make a huge financial mistake and buy a place then have to or want to leave and lose thousands upon thousands of dollars because you rushed in to quickly (I have seen this happen over and over and over again, with American's buying something, then returning to American only to have to sell at a huge loss to get out). Slow and steady wins the race here (BZ is a slow paced life anyway, start embracing that from day one and you will be much better off)

Thank you. That is a good reply. We are going to visit soon. Probably going to try to hit both locations in one trip to get the vibe.
