Hello! My husband and I are moving to Belize this year. What do you expats do about banking? Do you just keep your American banks? Now that everything can be done/moved back and forth online it seems like a good idea but is there a good reason to have a Belizean bank account?

You might have difficulty opening a Belize account, I know I did and only use the ATM now. When we bought our house wired directly to the lawyer.

Up to about 2015 it was long winded with all the red tape, but still doable, even able to do it on line, for expats. but as we did with our original account in 2013. Since then the rules and regulations have been tightened and tightened so much so it is virtually impossible for an expat to open an account with a domestic Belize bank. We can all thank the US Fica rules, and American banks deciding there was not enough profit in the small caribbean countries to continue to work as correspondent banks, as they would have to do more work to comply with the anti laundering rules.

You can get a bank account here but it takes time, patience and lots of paperwork.

There is a both an International Bank that you can deposit and withdraw in US Currency and then regular Belizean Banks, which would do all transactions in BZD.

Keep your US accounts, credit and debit cards. An International credit card (one that has no International Fees) is needed as well (and will save you a ton of problems and money).

More account options = more flexibility (and you will need that if you plan to be here, buy property or operate a business here).
