Thinking of moving back to Bermuda

I'm a 40 something bermudIan man with a canadian wife of 18 years. We have 2 kids (8 and 10). My wife wants to move back to Bermuda because she loved it there before we left in 2006 but I keep telling her it has changed a lot. We have alot of friends there and she misses them alot and she tells me this is one of the main reasons she wants to move back. I miss bermuda to but really I have to think with wisdom and not just my heart. My question is should we come back? I have no degree in finance or insurance. I ran my own business in Canada but that is the extent of my education. My wife is a accounts clerk for a small business.
She thinks we can come there and find good jobs and that the life would be so much better in bermuda. I am optomistic. I just don't to move here and struggle hard and just move back because we miss our friends and the sunny weather. We do good here in Canada but we struggle from time to time but where doesn't. Please any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

Don't bother, stay where you are unless you have a massive salary with housing, car, utilities etc, and enjoy doing nothing. I have been here a very short time and I hate it, worse thing I ever did and I have lived and worked in many countries and this is the worst ever. So after 5 months I am off! Expat second class the Bermudians who are living in dream world and think this place is something special and think the world owes them, well get real people is not even a spot on the are of the globe. And when the expats all leave you'll have nothing, goodbye Bermuda

Hi Buck, I have just returned to the UK from BDA, after 2 terms of 15 years in total working for The Marketplace. For a single man or young couple trying to save money in any industry outside of the vastly overpaid international business sector means little or no work/life balance. 5 bucks for a loaf of bread! Rents averaging 2k a month for a nice 1/2 bed apartment in a safe neighborhood and up from there, but unless you know someone that will employ you and pay good money, expect to be making about 15-20 bucks an hour in unskilled work. Being Bermudian might help though. Most of my Bermudian friends are looking or have already moved Stateside or Canada, so aren't far away if they want to visit friends and family in BDA.
I doubt you would be better off in BDA financially but better winters!
Any questions I'd be happy to help.

Do Not Move Back To Bermuda. although I am not familiar with Bermuda's history, I can tell you this: Bermuda is not the paradise everyone claims unless you are incredibly rich. Recently, there has been a rash of robberies, shootings, and demonstrations of civil unrest. don;t believe me? Read the "Royal Gazette."

My job in Bermuda afforded me the opportunity to speak with a cops. Island residents are angry because they cannot afford even the basic necessities in life, hence the uptick in violence. I also had the chance to speak with business owners who told me that even the wealthy are carefully watching their money, that another uprising is bound to happen as their is widening stratification in lower and upper incomes. Don;t believe me? Read the paper. The political situation is precarious. Those who extol the virtues of Bermuda live in a G-rated world with sprinkles on top. Do not move back. Bermuda's beautiful, but she ain't all that.

Thanks all for the feedback it was very beneficial.

How is the job market there now?

I also looked at lodging and found that a 2 bedroom goes for 2,000+! I have 2 kids and they could share but won't be long we would need to upgrade to a 3 bedroom.

And then there's schooling I went to a public school and it was fine but that was over 35 years ago, has it changed much? I hear of shootings which pretty much scares the crap out of me.

I know as a bermudian I have certain rights and perks but realistically how much would I have to earn to support my family and let's say my wife gets a job to (she use to work for a orthodontist). So between the both of us what would we need to make as a salary or hourly wage?

Again thanks for any feedback.

Hi -- cost of schooling is a consideration. Public schools are crumbling and some are closing. Private schools are $20K per year. There are a few good elementary schools but not many. Come visit and see with your own eyes is my advice.
