Hey,
Am in the running for a position on the island so need some honest feedback as there seems to be a varying degree of opinions on wage vs life!
So.... the salary is 72k USD but presume that there is still the monthly 'tax' so will be a less take-home, I will have a accommodation subsidiary from 2k to 750 USD per month though.
Will be moving on my own so going on your experiences will it be financially viable? I'm not a great fan of luxuries, well with the exception of a broadband line :-)
Thoughts/comments are welcomed (or should that be needed?)
Cheers

Good Afternoon Domh380:
Financially, you will be fine. A single person needs a minimum of $50,000 USD which covers the basics and maybe a dinner out once a month and a weekly glass of wine. a housing subsidy is key as you will find housing on the island is ridiculously expensive.
I am not a fan of luxuries either, but here is what happens in Bermuda: a movie at BUEI costs $15.00. Not bad, but factor in the lack of transportation, and the cost of that movie just escalated to $35.00-$40.00, factoring cab fare for a three mile cab ride. Consider buying a used scooter.
It sounds like fiscally you will be fine. Best of luck!

being a single person with that salary i think you'll be fine. the biggest chunk out of your paycheck as you can guess will be towards the rent so I'd advise looking around more judiciously to find something which offers some semblance of value-for-money. Often hard to find here on the island but it is possible.

The message is simple if you don't mind being a patsy for your employer and some are pretty good but their are others you should beware of promises to get you there followed on arrival by doing the opposite. No protection for you. Once you have moved well your on your own. Well if you are not a fan of luxury you are in the right place :-)
I wouldn't for anything less than $120 USD even with living expense.

i agree with decostelloe. You are at your employers mercy. My employer made promises she couldn't keep and I was cold and hungry. It is illegal to look for a job once you are on the island. Which means you cannot find a second job or switch jobs. Basically, you are stuck. also, the employer can have you kicked off the island for any reason - it does not have to be true. this did not happen to me but I have heard that it can happen - the gossip mill runs out of control - someone said that yo said that someone said.... et voila! you are gone. Very infantile.
The cost of living is ridiculous. You will just survive on $50 K USD.
As far as a social life, I joined a church (everyone was very welcoming and absolutely lovely), the American Club - again a wonderful group of people, and the BMDS- the Bermuda Music and Drama Society. All awesome . However, without exception, I was the only single person. - even at Thanksgiving dinner. Sad. After six months I couldn't take the loneliness. If you move to Bermuda, bring lots of money. And books.
