I am moving to Bermuda next month. I am going to clear my ties to Canada such as closing bank account, credit card. But I would like to keep my driver license If I can. Please advise if I can keep driver license. Thanks.

A new question: I heard that when a Canadian moves to USA, he or she can change his/her driver license without going through the road test. Will Bermuda does the same thing? Thanks

Hi, I have two Canadian friends who are both chartered accountants. Both received tax advice before leaving Canada and both were told different things. The one who gave up his licence now regrets that decision as he struggles to get around when he returns home. I do not think the one who retained his licence has had any bad effects from his decision.

About coming to Bermuda needs to take a scooter test or a car driving test before they can purchase a vehicle. You can rent a hire scooter on an overseas licence but you cannot register a vehicle ownership or get insurance without a Bermudian licence.

You need to separate topics to avoid confusion.
1. Anyone can keep any license they have from any country.
A country you move to MAY ask you to surrender it as part of an exchange.
If they do, you either choose to surrender it or do not surrender it and choose to take a driving test instead.
If you retain your Provincial license, you will need to return periodically to renew it. How long after it has expired a province will renew it without a new driving test varies by Province.
2. Regarding severing ties for TAX purposes, that is another topic entirely. That is about what you CHOOSE to do to avoid being 'deemed resident' for tax purposes. Keeping a driver's license really doesn't impact that unless there are other ties as well. It's not enough on it's own to have you 'deemed resident'.
