" I''ll be doing freelance writing from Sao Paulo. I want to make deposits and withdraw cash from an ATM, but since I won''t have a Brazilian social security number I can''t set up a Brazilian bank account. What to do? Know of e-banking/online options? "

" Hello, when I was travelling to Sao Paulo to visit my girlfriend, I used to use CITYBANK account with an account opened in Paris to withdraw and make deposits, I think it s quite easy because of the multiple citybank building in SP. Enjoy this wonderful country !!! Regards OD "

" Without the CPF to open a bank account, you can only use your overseas ATM card and that only for withdraws. Check with one of the international banks - Citicorp, HSBC, Boston to see if they can do a work-around (jeitinho) for you since you don''t have the CPF. I don''t think you can make deposits in an ATM for an overseas bank. You have to make bank transfers directly - bank to bank, and you may run into the CPF problem trying to do that. Another way, is to ask a friend (very good one) to transfer the money for you. Maurice (Gene) Whitmer "

" Barbara, Depends on where you are selling your writing ... if you are selling to the exterior .. have the purchaser mail your check to the bank ... and like Maurice says .. use the ATM to draw funds. Donald R. Reid Volunteer - Expat - Brazil "

" Barbara You''ll have to get that RG number or it''s no go. Not there yet, but any Brasilian can tell you where to go to get an RG number. When you moved to SP did you ship goods via container? I''m looking for someone to talk to about a shipping company and their experience shipping goods from the US. I''ll be leaving the US in May. "

" Larry, You may have already left for Sao Paulo but you asked about shipping goods via container. I can tell you from my experience, this is not easy task. I had my belongings shipped from the US to Sao Paulo and ran into many many problems in Port of Santos. At the end of my horrible experience, however, I did find a company in Santos that was very helpful. check it out if it is not too late Termares (013)219-7657 "

" I suggest getting the CPF (Brasilian social security number); it''s relatively easy, takes maybe an hour (once you find the location). The site I visited was organized, you took a number--and filled out a brief form after a 5 minute interview, sign it and it''s mailed to you. No big deal, but everyone wants you to have it (e.g. for gas or electric, library, cable TV, internet connections). I don''t have a checking account, but since you can pay almost anything by check (gardener, restaurant, etc.) it saves you having to get petty cash. Good luck! "
