" I live in Brazil and send Brazilians abroad to study. If you enter the US on a tourist visa you cannot work; legally, nor can you legally study. If you over stay your visa, then you could complicate getting a visa in the future for your Ph.D. I advise not going to the US as you are considering. Private ESL schools cost around US$500 to 800 per month fulltime intensive course. Free courses are available but they are not good. They are for persons who have little or no English, which is not your case. ] You should study English in Brazil. Take the TOEFL in Brazil. When you have an advance score 237+, then you can consider searching for a Ph.D program abroad. Go to: http://www.studyintl.com for more information. Gene "

" To whom it may concern. Dear Sirs, try to make it quick. I''m an American citizen, hispanic background (Argentinian parents). Have lived all my life, since 2 yrs old (27 now), in NE Brazil. Attending Law School on a Brazilian Law Program. Need to learn english, speak/read/write to advance in my carrer interests (want to do international law, human rights, minority rights) and to find a job. I have relatives in US (Fort Lauderdale), but could live only, as a maximum, one month with this relatives. Need to learn english, but don''t have money to pay private courses (in fact, i only will have money to pay air ticket and Us$ 200,00 for the first month - living with this relatives the first month I won''t need to spend money on housing, only food and personal expenses. I think 200 is enough). My question: are there, in Fort Lauderdale or near, english courses for adults (I think that 6 months is enough to learn, come back and finish my studies, then go again to US to do a masters/PhD - with a scholarship - to study human/minority rights). Also, is there any possibility to get some job that pays for a room rent, food and personal expenses (I cook) speaking only intermediate english? My family can''t help me sending me more money (nor my US relatives). I speak fluently spanish and portuguese. could you help me? If necessary, I could send my resume in english for a potential employer (or part-time employers). What I need is to find a jobs or more than a Job, to pay my expenses and, maybe, come back with some money to help my family (the currency is Us$ 1.00 - R$ 2.5 - local money). Waiting anxiously for your asnwer and advice, I remain yours truly. Sincerely, Gonzalo Salcedo "

" Hey, this is my first time here and I realize that you wrote this a long time ago. I have no idea what that other guy meant, maybe it was a joke. I did a quick search for ESL Schools in Fort Lauderdale on yahoo and the following websites came up. I''m sure if you went to www.yahoo.com and spent a bit more time, you''ll be able to find more information. $200 for the first month should be enough - considering all you are doing is buying food at the supermarket. There are tons of places in the US where they will hire only Spanish speakers, I''m assuming that Florida is the same. I''m not sure about Portuguese speakers...don''t know many since I''m in Texas, but there should be a restaurant in Florida that will be able to use another person in the kitchen...they also may have a call center that needs Spanish/Portuguese speakers. Well, good luck. I think what you''re studying is awesome. The classes at these institutes are expensive and you may need to work before you can afford them. Most of them have information in Portuguese and Spanish, so that shouldn''t be a problem. You might even be able to work out an exchange program with the school....you teach Spanish/Portuguese in return you''ll receive free English classes. Most importantly, don''t spend all of your time at home with the family. Find at least one American friend/ non-Spanish/Portuguese speaker and begin speaking as much as possible in English. As an ESL teacher I''ve met people who have lived in the US for 9 years and don''t even know how to say ""Hi, my name is ____"" GOOD LUCK!!!
