Hi everyone - I have looked on a million websites and have spoken to a thousand people on the phone, so now it's time to try here!

My and my wife were married in March 2003. Since then, we have been living in England waiting for the Home Office to process our application. We're thinking of leaving all that and just jetting off to Brazil and if we come back to the UK, then we'll apply from Brazil instead.

What would I have to do, being a British citizen, to be able to work in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) legitimately? Would I be able to do this automatically because we are married?

Any help will be very much appreicated!!

Thanks

Matt Fox

Hi Matthew,

I am a brazilian/american citizen on the process to move back to Brazil. My only suggestion is that you "must" register your marriage at your local brazilian consulate/embassy. If you just take the marriage certificate to Brazil they will not accept it. I've have been married for 12 years and now I am having a hard time myself to register my marriage because my husband was divorced before and never registerd the previous marriage/divorce at the consulate. So legally I am married in the States and single in Brazil. Legally, until you register your marriage at the consulate both of you are single in Brazil and you cannot register the marriage directly in Brazil.
Regarding how long it takes to become a legal resident in Brazil I do not know. I can only share with you that one of my neighbors, which is a US citizen, moved to Brazil last year and got his residency very fast. He did not get married. He is retired and was granted his residency based on his monthly income ( minimun of U$2k).
Good luck!! I hope you will like Brazil. I can't wait to move back..
