Healthcare in Brazil

I am planning to marry my Braziian boyfriend, who cannot get citizenship in the US (won't go into the sordid details). So that means that if love prevails, we need to move to Brazil and marry there. Since I am a US Citizen, and a bit spoiled by our health care system (even if it is very expensive), I wonder what health care is like in Brazil. My boyfriend has told me that it depends how much one is willing to pay, but basic care is inexpensive. I want to have a baby very soon, but I want to have good pediatric care in Brazil. I also don't want to live in the big cities, maybe close enough to drive in for medical care. Any advice??? My boyfriend is from Minas. We'll probably end up there, or perhaps a closer to Rio. Need to do lots more research but appreciate input on the health care system for a baby in Brazil.

Monica, actually, there is very good, even excellent health care available in Brazil. An important question is - do you plan on working in Brazil? If so, make health insurance a required benefit. Also, you can get cheap health insurance plans for around 80 Reals a month (ok, that´s not so cheap, but it´s about as cheap as they come) that will give you decent coverage. As your boyfriend said, there is public health care in Brazil - thank God, and it can be very good. But, here in Recife at least, it also means long lines. The good thing about living here is that if you have no other option, you will be able to get basic health care, but we all prefer to get health insurance!

One other point that I´d like to point out ... you mentioned wanting to have a baby. Make sure to discuss with your obstetrician whether you would prefer cesarian or natural childbirth. Here, there is a strong tendency towards unnecessary cesarians, and there are doctors that will come up with any excuse to assure you that it is necessary. If you don´t want to do a cesarian, except if necessary, talk with the doctor first!

Good luck in Brazil!
