Are you in Floripa?

Hey all... We're coming over to Floripa in November '08.

Are you going, are you there already? It's a tough one to gauge on renting for 6 months, we can only find short term tourist prices. Would be huge help to find some advice on what we can expect.

Our Brazilian isn't too good yet either, would be great to know if there's a gang of pats about to have a beer with!

Cheers
Jim

Hey,
I am moving to Floripa in December to live with my girlfriend there. She is Brazilian and we have visited there before, but I am looking into the same things as you right now! I did find a few helpful sites for rentals:
http://classificados.clicrbs.com.br/imoveis/

http://www.classificados-brasil.com/anuncios+santa-catarina-imoveis-aluguel.html

http://alugar-casa-imovel.vivastreet.com.br/alugar-casa-apartamento+santa-catarina

http://florianopolis.olx.com.br/casa-apartamento-para-aluguel-cat-363

Would love to meetup with you in December and have a beer!

Hey Jim,
I am coming there on November 27th and am looking for places but my girl tells me that right now is the worst time to rent there so we are going to live in another city until february or march and try to find a great deal when there are vacancies. How do you like it there?

This place is fantastic, you'll love it. Nice and peaceful now, everyone is getting ready for the summer. Come summer apparently it's very busy, so I think we'll enjoy watching the transition.

Yes, getting a place for 6 months was very difficult for us. The reason is this is a dream island for rich Argentines, Uruguayans, internationally etc. We looked without much luck to find somewhere to live, while nice houses sit empty waiting to be lived in just for new year and carnival. There doesn't seem much middle ground in prices, either cheaper than we wanted to pay and not very homely, or far too expensive. Our search was made harder because we wanted a nice place, being here 6 months we wanted a homely environment, not surfer/student/cheap tourist digs.

Happily we're in a lovely house now, I made a deal that we moved out for these 12 peak days, and got our rent for the 6 months cut in half, such is the amount of money they can make at these times. Everyone has told us 6 month rents aren't really done, it has to be 1 year, but our UK visa rights are a maximum 6 month stay. Basically it's either a 1 year lease, or you pay expensive day rates, that's your challenge here (unless you're loaded, then expensive is subjective!). After march, i hear it is far easier, but then that's the summer's end. I have to say we only considered living near the beach, we are a 5 minute walk away, we didn't see the point of moving here and staying in the main city part.

If I'd have any advice before, it would have been to know to get here as early before the summer as you can, maybe August, and it would have been easier.

If anyone reading this needs help, we have made friends here and had some options we turned down, but if you're here short term in the peak time it's going to cost you. Drop me a reply, and good luck. We're very happy that we will be here 6 months now, I can't even begin to do justice to how beautiful it is here.

Hi Jim,
My girlfriend and I are finally here! After 3 months of living with relatives and temporada rentals, we found a place in Ingleses bem em frente da praia. It has a pool, great security and is right in the downtown of Ingleses (such as it is) so we are thrilled.
Where are you living now? I would like to get together and have a beer if possible.
Everyone here speaks portuguese or spanish, not one iota of english, so sometimes i miss it.
Hope you're adjusting well.

Ah you made it! Well done, your place with a pool sounds cool!

We live in Barra da Lagoa, though we know a gang of ex pats that meet up round your way fairly regularly. I'm not so good with the lingo either, after 6 months here I certainly apprieciate someone I can have a conversation with. Over a beer even better!

I always get an error when I try to private message here, so I'll give you my number now, it's (+55) 48 8843 9770 , let me know wheh you have it and I'll edit it out this post.

Cheers
Jim

Jim,
Sorry to take so long to reply! This site never sends me an email like my settings say and it always slips my mind to check here.

Barra da Lagoa is beautiful and my girlfriend and I have made several trips there. (Actually, one time we got off the bus at the beach in Moçabique for a short stroll. Two hours later, we dragged into to Barra da Lagoa!)

Got your number now, so when we have a chance, we'll give a ring and maybe we can get together sometime and have a little respite from the Porta-cheese.

Steve

Hey Caffo,
Fpolis is amazing and breathtaking. You definitely will not regret living here. The best way to get a job here is to teach English at one of the many schools (Teddy Bear, CNA, Language Club, etc). I am lucky enough to still work for an American company and have a salary in dollars, so that has helped the situation immensely. Coming now in the offseason (when it is cold), you will find prices really cheap ($200-$500 US). If you come in the Temporada time, everything is unbelievably expensive. My girlfriend and I paid R$1200/month for a terrible place until prices went down. If you need any help on anything else, I'll be glad to do what I can.

Hello All:

I am moving to Floripa in September and I am planning to take some intermediate Portuguese and Kite-Surf Courses when I get there. Does anyone have any good leads for reasonably priced, quality courses for either one? Also, I am assuming that by traveling outside the country after 3 months the 180-day tourist visa in Brasil is reactivated another 3 months, right? I believe this process can be repeated for the duration of the official visa (5 years)....??
Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.
