Are American channels such as ABC NBC CBS and Fox available either through cable or satellite in Florianopolis?

I'm not sure about Florianpolis specifically.

Just an idea - if you have a relative in the states, you can buy a Slingbox, hook it up to their system, and then you can access it through the internet in Brazil and watch those plus any premium channels, etc. free. Food for thought...

What is a Slingbox? Where are they sold? If the relatives internet went down here in the states, would that affect my reception in Brazil?

It lets you watch cable TV from any place in the world. Yes, if it went down you wouldn't be able to watch.
You can buy it at most electronic stores in the US, and on ebay.
If you google slingbox, you;ll find a better explanation than I can give you!!
They are pretty cool...
