Other expats in Recife?

Hi there, I am an Australian, mid 20s, who moved to Brazil 2 months ago. I'm living in Recife and wondering if there is an expat community here? I would love to meet some people in a similar situation and have a little break from struggling through conversations in Portuguese! Any advice on how I can connect with other foreigners here would be appreciated - I can't seem to find any groups outside of Rio and Sampa. Thanks!

I did the same thing 13 years ago. Moved from Colorado to SP. I spoke 0 Portuguese, yet I carried my dictionary with me constantly and had the good fortune to work with English speaking Brasilians. Eventually I learned enough Portuguese to convince a Brasileira to marry me and return to the states where we live now. My Portuguese, is conversationally fluent, but not perfect as we speak mostly English at home for the benefit of my wife and son. When you do what you are planning, you cannot hope or rely that you will meet someone to help you navigate life in Brasil, especially when you are going to live in an area where to possibilities of encountering an English speaking person is limited. You need to immerse yourself in SP and go from there.

Hi

I'm in Recife for the second time now. Spending 2 weeks now, then 3 weeks in february and then permanently from March. I am definately looking for an expat community - did you manage to locate any? Just saw your post and thought I'd get in touch. I'm 28 and from Norway so totally see the fun with the portuguese :)

Hi! I live in the U.S., but I own a house over on Itamaraca Island. There are a bunch of English-speaking expats over there. Ask for Peter Zorab. He's from the U.K. I suspect just about everyone there knows him.
