Hello fellow expats! I haqve finally made the move to Brazil after a year and a half of "planning" it. Currently I am living with some relatives in Joinville, Santa Catarina. I am at the moment looking for english teaching jobs at local schools here. I do have a bachelor's in psychology and a Master's in counseling, both from acredited Florida universities. I am wondering if I can make a living teaching english, at least long enough for me to get my diplomas validated in a Federal Univeristy here in Brazil. (i have Brazilian citizenship, CPF etc...so that is not a problem) The only problem is the wait time for validation of my diplomas, and I need a job ASAP.

Hi!
I wonder if you are aware that it is not possible for foreigners to work in Brazil unless you have a visa that allows you to do so. I suggest you contact the Brazilian Consulate nearest to your home and get all the necessary info. Do not make any move until you know where you stand. Good luck! Margaret Arlington Reg. Dear HeloCopter, I am living not far from you, in Curitiba, and working as an English teacher. You do not need to have your diplomas validated to teach. All you need is a valid work permit, which is just a formality if you are already a Brazilian citizen or have your permanent residency (RNE). (Your email says you are already a citizen although that generally takes several years to obtain.) You just need to start pounding the pavement, the same way you would anywhere else. Visit all the English-language schools. In Curitiba, there are hundreds of these schools. I also work giving private classes to Brazilians in my apartment. The big question really is can you "make a living." That will depend on how quickly you find work. Some of the schools are not reputable and go out of business. Some are delayed in paying their teachers. However, if English is your native language, it shouldn't be hard getting some work. I don't know how many schools there are in Joinville. You may need to move to a larger city. You can certainly put up signs at the local grocery store, etc. advertising your services. Private tutoring pays a lot more than teaching in school and your students will pay you in cash and no one will ask if you are a citizen or have a work visa or work permit. My advice for this week would be to get some ESL textbooks or some English grammar books. If you really want to make a living as a teacher, you will need to know what you are talking about and how to answer students' questions when they ask why you need to say "I am going to the store" and not "Me is going to the store." I hope that's helpful.

I have already put all my documents in order after being in the USA for 15 years. Today I have my first interview at a school here in Jlle, it is called yazigi. I plan on doing private tutoring, but I think I need a bit more experience teaching until I can do it on my own. Previously I only worked at restaurants and a year at a drug rehab clinic (as part of my Master's in counseling and BA in Psychology) I hope working teaching english will help me get by, as I am really excited about finally "moving" back to brazil after always wanting to. thanks everyone for the advice, if anyone else has anything to add, please feel free to reply!
To answer others: To work as a psyschologist, you NEED to get your diploma validated by a FEDERAL University. UFSC only opens the process in april, and I hear it takes a while. Therefore I need a job in the meantime. Also once you're validated, you need to register with the state you are practicing in, and most likely take a test. hope it helps.

Have you found a job already? Well, I'm from Joinville, maybe I can help you. I study English at a school called "Influx". I think they might be interested in hiring a native teacher.
Here's their e-mail and telephone in case you want to contact them:

Hi. I am Vaishnavi from India and I will be moving to Joinville by the end of this year (2016). My husband is an Indian on a Vitem V (work visa) and I will be on a Dependent visa. Am I allowed to find a job as an English teacher? If yes, what certification should I provide? I have a Bachelor's in Biotechnology and a Masters in Environmental engineering from Singapore. Do I have to do a certification course to be allowed to teach English in Brazil? Also, what are the chances of finding a job there?

Hey Vaishnavi, if you go to any private (and there are MANY) english schools, you wont need to have any certification...they will do an interview, and probably ask you to do a practice test, being the cambrige or the TOEFL ITP, but nothing official, I also have a bachelors and a masters, but that usually is nothing for teaching. :) They will ask you however for legal documents that you can work in Brazil,

Hello!
Unfortunately, I do not know any schools I can recommend but you may do your own research. Does your situation in Brazil allow you to work in this country? If it does not, it may be difficult to find someone who would hire you. Having said that, there schools that do. If I were you, I would send an e-mail to as many language schools and bilingual schools as possible in Florianópolis, Blumenau, Joinville, Criciúma, Tubarao, etc. and see how it goes. Do not forget to attach your CV and your certificates to all the e-mails you send.
Good luck!

With your degree, why don't you try to find something in your area of expertise ? Lots of industry there. For teaching English you'll have to go visit all of the schools there in town. Teaching English won't make you rich for sure.
